ScotRail trials wi-fi using satellite technology

ScotRail will use Elon Musk's satellite technology to supply passenger wi-fi on trains for the first time during a six-month trial.

Six trains in the north of Scotland have been fitted with equipment that connects to the low Earth orbit (Leo) satellite network Starlink.

The trains operate on the Inverness to Wick, Thurso, Kyle of Lochalsh, and Aberdeen services:

Project Kuiper enters the satellite broadband market, challenging Starlink

The long-awaited deployment of Project Kuiper lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 7:01 p.m. Eastern time on April 28. Kuiper represents Amazon’s first operational step into a field currently dominated by SpaceX’s Starlink.

Carried by United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket, the initial tranche of satellites are the beginning of Amazon’s planned 3,236-satellite constellation, backed by a $10 billion investment commitment:

Fears farmers are being forgotten by tech firms

Farmers are being left behind because of the high cost of installing full fibre broadband in rural areas, according to a National Farmers' Union (NFU) representative in Derbyshire.

Andrew Critchlow, the NFU's county advisor, said having a fast and reliable internet connection was increasingly important for farmers but there were pockets of farmers who struggled to get online.

The latest figures from the NFU revealed 34% of its members had full fibre broadband - compared to 57% of properties nationally - in a 2023 study.

Openreach said 339,000 homes now already had this form of broadband in Derbyshire and it was working with the government and the county council to reach more properties:

Zen Internet Survey Claims 52 Percent of Brits Still Have a Landline

A new Censuswide survey conducted on behalf of UK broadband ISP Zen Internet, which involved 2,000 nationally representative UK consumers aged 16+ (surveyed during Q1 2025), claims to have found that 52% of Brits still have a landline, yet only 15% use it regularly.
