Kids going back to school soon, and if their laptop's been sat gathering dust all summer, now's the time to sort it.

Quick checklist before term kicks off:

✅ Passwords - is it still the one from Year 7? Sort it now, and switch on two-factor if the school offers it
✅ Wi-Fi - check the signal actually reaches their room/study spot before it becomes a nightly battle over buffering video calls
✅ The laptop itself - updates, storage, battery - all the stuff that piles up over a summer of not being touched
✅ Backups - so a lost file the night before deadline day doesn't mean starting again from scratch
✅ Antivirus/parental controls - especially once they're doing more on their own for secondary school

BitLocker recovery keys catch a lot of people out, and it's worth knowing about before it happens to you.

Windows can turn BitLocker encryption on without you really knowing, and if that recovery key isn't saved somewhere (linked Microsoft account, printed out, wherever) you've got no way in if anything goes wrong with the drive. Without it, that's your data gone - not "hard to get back", gone.

For business customers this is less of a worry since your data's usually backed up to a server, NAS or 365 anyway. But for home users, if you're not sure your PC or laptop is set up right, it's worth checking before it becomes a problem rather than after.

Please don't leave your laptop in the car.

We know it seems harmless – you're just popping into the shops, it'll be fine. But on a hot day, the inside of a parked car can hit 60°C or more, and laptops absolutely hate that.

Swollen batteries. Warped lids. Screens that'll never look right again. Sometimes worse.

It's one of those things you don't think about until it's too late.

Overheating gaming PC?

We recently had a gaming PC in for repair.

The PC was overheating due to a broken Liquid CPU Cooler. Overheating is one of the fastest ways to wreck a PC. We replaced the Liquid CPU Cooler with a new be quiet! Liquid CPU Cooler and gave the PC a service; removing dust build up and cleaning the components.

We had a laptop in yesterday where a gel-filled squishy ball had been pushed through a laptop vent and the gel had caused a reaction with the plastic inside the case.

We've done some reading up on this and some of these gel-filled squishies, particularly the cheap unbranded ones, can contain chemicals that cause skin irritation, rashes, or worse with prolonged contact. If it can do this to plastic, imagine the damage it could cause to your child's skin.

Not saying all of them are dangerous, but if your kids have got these, it might be worth checking where they came from and also checking for manufacturer/importer details, clear safety warnings and instructions, UKCA/CE marking, and clear English labelling.

Another laptop that we recently serviced and a first for us, we found a feather inside the fan.

We start our laptop service by removing the back covers and cleaning any vents. We then remove the fans, give them a thorough clean and, if necessary, lubricate them with a drop of specialist oil. Next, we clean the heatsinks and apply new thermal paste. Once that’s done, we clean any ports, such as USB ports, then reassemble the laptop and carry out a series of checks.
