This week we had a meeting with the project's design team where we discussed plans for the display of the project. We also got to see the projects weather data and interactive map in action. The project is coming together ready for our launch at Techniquest later this month!

Yr wythnos hon cawsom gyfarfod gyda thîm dylunio'r prosiect lle buom yn trafod cynlluniau ar gyfer yr arddangosfa
o'r prosiect. Cawsom hefyd weld data tywydd y prosiect a'r map rhyngweithiol ar waith. Yr

There are bright skies and calm winds over on this week.
Our project with Flat Holm Island Official will be demonstrating weather data like this reported from the island by using an interactive display at Techniquest
The display will allow visitors to learn about the current weather and animals on Flat Holm.

Mae yna Awyr las hyfryd ac awel ysgafn ar yr wythnos hon.
Bydd ein prosiect gyda Flat Holm Island Official yn dangos y tywydd ar yr ynys drwy ddefnyddio arddangosfa
ryngweithiol Techniquest
Bydd yr arddangosfa yn rhoi’r cyfle i ymwelwyr ddysgu am y tywydd a'r anifeiliaid ar Ynys Echni.

The past couple of weeks have been all about the best way to represent the sun, rain and wind data that we receive from Flat Holm every 15 minutes! Below are some of the patterns we've been playing with. Our sun pattern and its programmed sequence are pretty much figured out and signed off, but the rain and wind patterns need a few more tweaks before deciding! Stay tuned for the results!

Our first testing session last week yielded some great results and suggestions on how to make the Flat Holm data physicalisation even better! A big thank you to all who took part!

The Flat Holm map is getting scaled up to the actual size it will be in Techniquest and members of the team are looking at just how many LED lights we're going to need to make the colours really pop!

The team has also been testing various sun patterns for the weather automata as we try to make interesting and meaningful patterns driven by the weather data we receive from Flat Holm!

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, the interactive sustainability farmhouse is being reduced to a simpler idea, perhaps a simple picture of the farmhouse taken from the island in order to still give the back side of the data physicalisation the idea that it is a full image of the island (farmhouse, sky with weather automata, solar panels, etc.).

Watch this space for even more updates!!!

We are now using the rich flora and fauna data from Flat Holm to create a wonderful programme map that we hope to light up in Techniquest.

The attractive map will grab the attention of people whilst also being educational and interesting!

Last week, one of the DAPTEC team was lucky enough to finally go out to Flat Holm island for the day! It was an amazing experience, being able to finally see the island we have only heard about and it allowed us to have a better feel for how the work we are doing will benefit the island. Whilst over there, our team member got speaking to some of the volunteers on the island as well as the island warden himself to learn even more about Flat Holm and add to our pool of knowledge.

Back on the mainland, we decided that the toblerones needed a much more official sounding name, so they have been renamed the weather automata! Some of the team have been on site working on this structure over the past week, laser cutting patterns and attaching them and also programming some patterns to see how the weather will be represented!

It's been a while, but DAPTEC is back! As we look ahead to entering prototyping and testing, it's all about getting into the nitty-gritty and deciding exactly how the data physicalisation will look to the public. It's also time to do some work on the back end, working out the technology that will be needed to run everything and how it will be programmed.

The sustainability house has had a slight redesign, adding a wind turbine and a battery that supplies the house with electricity that it draws from both the turbine and the solar panel. There is also talk of removing the pressure pads spoken of previously and replacing them with buttons. This would make the artefact more accessible to people in wheelchairs but would still get the interactive element across!

Stay tuned for the upcoming prototypes and tests!

Things are really starting to take shape now! The DAPTEC team have been doing more work with the Flat Holm map and the LEDs, and the debate now is whether we go with less space between them which produces crisper, sharper lines between the different sections or more space which allows for a bit of colour mixing. Take a look below and let us know what you think!

Also pictured below is a little e-ink display that we have been testing on. We've been trying to see if the text and images are clear enough to be used to display the warden's logbook entries from his days on the island, and thankfully it looks like these displays will work well. We've got a couple of bigger ones on the way to play with that will hopefully become part of the finished display!

Finally, we've been fleshing out the sustainability section by sketching and creating a rendition of the farmhouse on the island. The darker lines will hopefully be etched into the wooden panel whist the lighter lines will be entirely cut out to allow for LEDs to sit behind them. These lights will be triggered by jumping on the pressure mats in front of the display and will be able to simulate water flower, electricity coming on and more!

It was National Meadows Day on Saturday. At Daptec we are recording data of the Bluebells found on Flat Holms grassland. But did you know that blue bells are not actually blue but rather a type of violet.

Last week, some of the DAPTEC team were finally able to meet up; socially distanced and safe, of course! It was such a valuable experience to be able to talk in person and also to experiment! The main focus was nailing down some of the details of the Flat Holm flora and fauna map and how the different species will be represented.

Another big part of the day was experimenting with LED lights, diffusion and the effects of frosted acrylic. This allowed us to see what the final artefact may look like. We were able to create some nice and interesting patterns with the light, as well as creating walls between the different light colours that prevented any colour bleeding. There is so much more to play with, and the next few weeks will be crucial! Wish us luck!

It appears that another breakthrough has been reached due to the chats that the team have had over the past week or so! You'll remember that our problem regarding our sustainability story was the worry that linking the Flat Holm weather data (represented by the turning toblerones) and the interactive pressure pads that provide sun/rain/wind to the house/tap/turbine on the artefact would perhaps cause some confusion.

The solution involves a slightly new design for the sustainability panel of the artefact, now containing three sets of ten toblerones (still representing sun/rain/wind) and a sort of dollhouse design in which the visitor can see into the house and are able to see things like the TV, shower and tap inside.

The default state will come from the Flat Holm weather data. However, if there are low readings then the visitors may become encouraged to get involved and jump on the pressure pads to provide the sun/rain/wind that the house needs. Once the visitor walks away, this will then reset back to the default state.

The team can't wait to test this out!
