A wonderful man, an absolute class act, Ian Collins was buried today. We're so lucky to have worked together and be part of his story. Tonics meant the world to Ian. Not just a mod-themed clothes shop. It was somewhere a community convened, friends swapped stories, talked about music and more.

Ray Dalio was a below-average high school student who was genuinely happy when he pulled a C-minus. Traditional, test-heavy classes didn't suit how his brain worked — so he caddied instead, talked stocks with Wall Street executives on the golf course and bought his first share at age 12.

He went on to found Bridgewater Associates, one of the world's largest hedge funds, and complete an MBA at Harvard.

His hiring philosophy is a direct product of that path.

"I get to hire the best of the best out of whatever schools I want," he said. But he's skeptical that top grades predict what he actually needs. "The student who did really, really well — remembering everything they learned — may not be the most inventive, may not be the most determined."

What he screens for instead: evidence that someone has confronted real barriers and pushed through them. "There's a lot of people who are talented in circumstances where there are barriers — and they got past their barriers. That's quite good."

The lesson isn't that credentials don't matter. Dalio went to Harvard Business School. It's that credentials tell you what someone could remember under controlled conditions. Adversity tells you what someone does when the conditions aren't controlled — when there's no right answer, no safety net and no guarantee it works out.
