Ranking #1 on Google, Invisible to ChatGPT
You spent £120,000 to rank number one on Google. ChatGPT is recommending your competitor instead.
Only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot rank in Google's top 10 for the same term. 80% of AI-cited sources don't appear in Google's top 100 at all.
Classical rank and generative citation have diverged. Google rewards backlinks and on-page keyword relevance. Generative engines chunk your content, score passages on factual density and extractability, and separately resolve your brand as an entity against knowledge graphs before they will cite you - to avoid hallucinating.
The correlation data is brutal. Branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.664. Traditional backlinks manage just 0.218 - roughly a third as strong.
A Manchester B2B SaaS firm held Google position one for its flagship term and found its Share of Model in AI answers was 2%. A smaller competitor ranking around position 14 held 65% Share of Model - because it had built entity confidence across Wikidata, trusted directories and a satellite mention network rather than chasing backlinks.
51% of UK B2B buyers now start supplier research in an AI tool, not Google. Ranking number one on a scoreboard your buyers are quietly abandoning is an expensive way to stay invisible.
