Multisensor Systems

Multisensor Systems Multisensor Systems Ltd is a developer & supplier of monitors for detection of VOCs and THMs in water & air.

The instruments are used by water utilities industrial companies & environmental agencies. Multisensor Systems started life in the University of Manchester. The company was the brainchild of Professor Krishna Persaud, an acknowledged authority in the development of sensors for the detection of gases. The original development was for an instrument to detect heavy organic loads in waste water, allow

ing treatment works to respond to the loading with changes in dosing or storage of waste until it could be processed. This was followed by an instrument to detect very low concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in clean water to protect drinking water treatment plants. This instrument became the MS1000 which Multisensor ships today. The success of the MS1000 caused the University of Manchester Intellectual Property (UMIP) company to inject seed funding and establish Multisensor Systems Ltd as an entity in 2007. In 2009, with sales increasing there then became the need for full time management and support staff and so the company sought funding to take it to the next stage of development. This funding was won in March 2010 and the first staff employed. The company moved from the University campus at the end of August 2010 to premises in the South of Manchester. Now the company is broadening it's offering to on line THM measurement in the water distribution network and widening the application base for its products and the geographical markets in which it sells.

We’ve just finished walking the Water Equipment Show 2026 in Telfor and the focus across the industry is clear: the future of water is even more data-driven & connected, sustainable (tighter regulations) and sustainable.

At Multisensor Systems , these themes hit home. Our no-contact sensor technology from monitoring VOCs in drinking water to detecting oil in wastewater is designed specifically to:
- Reduce Maintenance: No sensor fouling means fewer site visits
- Drive Efficiency: Real-time (every 2 seconds), continuous data helps utilities react instantly to pollution events.
- Future-Proof Infrastructure: Providing the high-sensitivity monitoring with different communication protocols to connect with your smart water networks.

It was fantastic to see so many customers (such as Severn Trent, SWW and United Utilities) and partners there. The conversations we had there were most on how we can do more with less: protecting assets and ensuring water quality with smarter technology.

It was inspiring to see the innovations in technical sessions on Room D. We’re coming away from Telford with new ideas and even stronger partnerships to help our customers with their challenges.

Did you make it to the show? What was your biggest takeaway from WES 2026? Let’s discuss in the comments!

Groundwater protection starts with better monitoring.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can migrate through soil and groundwater undetected for long periods, creating environmental, regulatory, and operational risks.

That’s why continuous borehole monitoring is becoming increasingly important across contaminated land, landfill, industrial, and remediation projects.

The MS1200-S provides a reliable solution for real-time VOC monitoring in boreholes, helping operators detect changes early, improve site safety, and make faster data-driven decisions.

Key benefits include:
✔ Continuous monitoring instead of periodic spot checks
✔ Early detection of VOC migration
✔ Better insight for remediation

As environmental standards continue to tighten, proactive monitoring is no longer optional — it’s essential.

Technology like the MS1200-S is helping the industry move from reactive investigation to predictive environmental management.

Two great days of meetings and technical-commercial discussions with Jerónimo Jiménez Landa from EQUITROL S.L. , our exclusive distributor for Spain.

With more than 10 years of experience representing Multisensor Systems in Spain and Mexico, EQUITROL S.L. has a huge installation base of THMs analysers and a growing base of oil in water analysers all over Spain.

If you are looking to measure THMs in your drinking water treatment plant, detect hydrocarbons at the effluents or at an inlet or you just need to detect VOCs in gas and water, get in touch with EQUITROL S.L.

A recent installation of our MS1200-S Oil in Water Analyser shows the growing importance that Water Treatment Plants are giving to the protection of their water intakes from random pollution events.

Thanks to the online monitoring of VOCs at the intake, they can detect pollution events early on and make sure that highly contaminated water does not get into their WTP affecting their GAC beds or, even worse, the quality of finished water.

Some commonly found VOCs and their origins are listed below:

Industrial Solvents & Degreasers
Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) – Dry cleaning and metal degreasing
Trichloroethylene (TCE) – Metal degreasing, electronics
1,1,1-Trichloroethane – Aerosols, adhesives (now banned in many places but persists)
Carbon tetrachloride – Industrial solvent (legacy)
Dichloromethane – Paint stripper, pharmaceutical production

Fuel Hydrocarbons (BTEX)
Benzene – Gasoline additive, industrial chemical
Toluene – Gasoline, paint thinners
Ethylbenzene – Gasoline, manufacturing
Xylenes – Gasoline, printing, rubber

Fuel Oxygenates & Additives
MTBE (Methyl tert-butyl ether) – Former gasoline oxygenate (very persistent, highly water-soluble)
TAME, ETBE – Less common but possible

Chlorinated Alkanes
1,2-Dichloroethane – Leaded gasoline additive, PVC precursor
1,2-Dichloropropane – Soil fumigant, solvent

Monocyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (other than BTEX)
Styrene – Plastics, resin manufacturing
Cumene (isopropylbenzene) – Solvent, phenol

Many WTP in the UK and abroad have already installed traditional oil in water analysers such as the MS1200. Moreover customers who are really concerned about pollution at their intakes (and the consequences this can have) have been even installing redundancy systems.

With the new -S series we are bringing the protection of water intakes to the next level with:
- Improved response
- Easier installation and configuration
- More communication and intelligence
- An overall improved system

If you are the operator of a WTP and want to know more on how we can help, get in touch, we are ready to help.
