Hi! I'm Harvey, a character artist working with Time Machine Designs, and I’m pleased to showcase my contributions to our project ‘RAF Kenley 1940’.

My role consists of creating a period accurate RAF fighter pilot, in both a formal and combat ready attire, and a selection of ground crewmen, used to populate RAF Kenley.

Each character requires extensive research, following historically accurate outfits and imagery as reference. From this information I build a high resolution digital sculpt using ZBrush to capture all the details, which are then transferred to an optimised model and texture set, made using Blender and Adobe Substance Painter respectively. This process requires a lot of patience, however making it to the final result makes it all worth it.

Models shown include a ground crewman & fighter pilot in standard dress, and a combat ready pilot WIP. Variants of the ground crewman are also in the works. All characters will be rigged and animated prior to release.

We had a great time this past weekend at FSimUK 2026, hosted by Aerospace Bristol! It was great getting to chat to so many others in the industry and the flight sim community, and showing off our projects!

Massive thank you to Bristol Digital Game Lab and University of Bristol for having us at the new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus at the Sloane Robinson Building yesterday. It was great to see so many people from the wider Bristol area engaging with our Hadrian's Wall and RAF Kenley projects, wanting to learn more and have a fly around in the simulator! Some amazing projects from the wider Game Lab crew on display too, and we look forward to further building our partnership in the future.

Greetings! My name is Fergus Keogh, a 3D Generalist here at Time Machine Designs, and I am incredibly proud to finally share one of my contributions for our recent project, ‘RAF Kenley 1940’ in this week's spotlight.

One of my main responsibilities on RAF Kenley 1940 was creating prop aircraft, with a strong focus on historical accuracy.

Each aircraft required extensive research, from dimensions and materials to the identification markings and colour schemes used on the originals. The goal was to recreate every detail as accurately as possible before sending them through QA and having them imported into the scene to fill the many hangars and aircraft stands you are able to explore in ‘RAF Kenley 1940’.

Being able to bring these iconic aircraft back to life in a digital environment has been an incredible experience. Providing me the opportunity to learn so much more about these iconic machines and the history behind them - even those I thought I already knew so well. A huge privilege to play a part in such an amazing team recreating this vital piece of aviation history.

Hello, I’m Hannah Maggs, a 3D Generalist Artist, who has worked alongside Time Machine Designs, and this week’s spotlight will be highlighting some of my contributions to the RAF Kenley 1940 project.

My main role within the RAF Kenley 1940 project was building historically accurate models within Blender, while also taking on the role of Lead Quality Assurance Tester for textures across the project’s assets.

It was a great experience working as part of the TMD team and contributing to a project focused on recreating such an important historical environment. Being able to work across both the development and quality assurance sides of the project gave me the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of areas throughout production.

Hello, I'm Phoebe Gibson and I'm a 3D generalist for Time Machine Designs! Today's highlight will be featuring the Castle of Zorita, developed in collaboration with Dr Sarah Slinguff.

The project demonstrates an example of a 9th Century Spanish-Islamic Castle and was built from the floor plan up alongside feedback and research provided by Dr Slinguff. It gave room for a lot of developmental changes throughout, as we don't have complete concrete knowledge of any one part. This left a lot of space for reasonable creative liberties and allowed us to show off plenty of fascinating architectural and design features of Islamic architecture! It was a pleasure to work on such an interesting project and have the opportunity and challenge to be the project lead.

Hi, I'm Nathanael, another member of the TMD team. This is our first Work In Progress post highlighting my progress on our Siege of Oxford 1644 project.

For this project I am working with Paul Beckmann, who is researching an ancestor's part in the design of Oxford's English Civil War siege defences.
Working from original plans and paintings I mapped the line of the siege defences into Google Earth to relate them to the modern city.
I then worked with Paul to get the dimensions and angles of the ramparts for the model.

The untextured model has now been placed around Oxford in the simulator for review by Paul.
I am also working on a set of objects to create a diorama on the ramparts.
We will feature the final model in a future post.

Hello, I’m Jay Dumpleton, a 3D artist at Time Machine Designs. My main role within the RAF Kenley 1940 project was modelling and texturing vehicles.

This weeks spotlight will be highlighting the Willys Jeep, a vehicle widely used within RAF Kenley. The Willys Jeep was mainly used as a lightweight, all-purpose utility and command reconnaissance vehicle; However within RAF Kenley it was commonly used as a “Follow Me” and ground control vehicle. Typically painted with a highly visible checked exterior the Willys Jeep would guide aircrafts through taxiways and runway thresholds.
