Built something for fellow IT folks, a free toolkit at salmanittools.co.uk.

After 25+ years in Microsoft 365, Azure and cloud infrastructure, I got tired of the same problems eating up time on every job: explaining a messy Conditional Access policy to a client, tracing why an email landed in spam, or just needing a quick subnet calc without hunting for a decent one online. So I built the tools I kept wishing existed.

A few worth checking out:
→ M365 Security Scanner: signs in and flags MFA gaps, risky admin roles and CA misconfigurations in your tenant
→ Conditional Access Policy Explainer: paste your policy JSON, get it back in plain English
→ Email Header Analyzer, Subnet Calculator, JWT Decoder, plus everyday utilities like QR codes, password generation and image compression

Everything runs in your browser: no signup, nothing uploaded to a server. Free to use.

salmanittools.co.uk - would genuinely appreciate a look and any feedback from other IT folks here.

Your face could soon become another way to unlock your Google account.

Google has started rolling out a new Selfie Video sign-in feature. If you ever get locked out of your account, you can use a short selfie video to help prove it's really you.

The important part: you need to set this up in advance. It is not something you do after losing access.

Google says the video is encrypted and used for sign-in purposes by default. However, during setup there is an optional setting that allows Google to use your selfie video and related data to help improve facial recognition and verification technologies.

As biometric security becomes more common, convenience and privacy will always need to be balanced.

Would you trust a selfie video as an account recovery method, or would you stick with passwords, passkeys and MFA?

Still using SMS or phone call MFA in Microsoft Entra? It's time to check your tenant.

Microsoft is changing the authentication experience over the next few months:

📅 1 September 2026
• Passkeys become the default experience.
• Users using SMS/Voice will start receiving passkey registration prompts.
• Microsoft-managed registration campaign is automatically enabled for affected users.

📅 1 February 2027
• Microsoft-provided SMS and Voice authentication is retired.
• If a user only has SMS/Voice configured, they won't be able to continue signing in until they register a passkey (unless you've implemented a supported customer-managed telecom provider).

Can you disable the September prompts?

Yes. Microsoft will provide a temporary opt-out for the September registration enforcement while you complete your migration. However, there is no opt-out for the February 2027 retirement. That deadline is firm.

Before you start planning, answer one simple question:

Who in your tenant is still using SMS or Voice?

Microsoft has published a PowerShell script that reports exactly that, making it much easier to assess large environments before the migration begins.

If you manage Microsoft 365 or Entra ID, this is one change you don't want to leave until the last minute.

Device Code Flow is an authentication method designed for devices that cannot display a normal sign-in page, such as:

✅ Azure CLI
✅ Teams Rooms devices
✅ Smart TVs / shared devices
✅ Some IoT devices

The user receives a code, visits Microsoft’s sign-in page from another device, enters the code, completes authentication, and the device receives an access token.

The problem? Attackers can abuse this flow in phishing attacks.

Example:

🚨 An attacker says:
"Your Microsoft account needs verification. Go to this Microsoft page and enter this code."

The user unknowingly authenticates the attacker’s session. The attacker may then gain access to Microsoft 365 resources using the stolen token.

🛡️ Using Microsoft Entra Conditional Access, organisations can block Device Code Flow:

Conditional Access Policy:

Condition:
➡️ Authentication Flows → Device Code Flow

Access Control:
➡️ Block Access

However, do not enable this blindly.

Before blocking, review Entra Sign-in Logs and identify legitimate usage.

⚠️ Common exclusions to consider:

✅ Teams Rooms / shared meeting room devices
Some room devices may rely on device-based authentication flows. Validate your deployment before blocking.

✅ Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD)
AVD environments may require careful testing. Do not assume every AVD deployment is affected, but validate authentication methods used by your hosts and applications.

✅ Service accounts / automation accounts
Review any non-interactive authentication scenarios.

✅ Break glass emergency accounts
Always exclude emergency access accounts from Conditional Access policies.

Recommended approach:

1️⃣ Start with Report Only mode
2️⃣ Review sign-in logs
3️⃣ Identify impacted applications/devices
4️⃣ Create required exclusions
5️⃣ Enable the policy gradually

The goal is not simply to block authentication methods. The goal is to reduce attack surface without breaking business-critical services.

🔐 **Phishing-resistant authentication is one of the most effective ways to protect Microsoft Entra ID accounts from credential theft.**

Unlike traditional passwords or SMS codes, phishing-resistant methods such as **Windows Hello for Business**, **FIDO2 security keys**, **Microsoft Authenticator (passwordless)**, and **Certificate-Based Authentication (CBA)** help prevent attackers from stealing or replaying credentials.

Moving to passwordless authentication isn't just about stronger security. It also improves the user experience while significantly reducing the risk of phishing attacks.

Which phishing-resistant method has your organization adopted, or is planning to adopt?
