Today, we're talking about what connectivity looked like 35 years ago.

Think about a desktop computer and a desk phone. If the workplace changed, the cabling had to change with it.

Then broadband, structured Ethernet, Wi-Fi and IP telephony turned the network into the backbone of the modern workplace.

Today, cloud platforms, video meetings, mobile devices, smart buildings and hybrid working have moved demand everywhere. But they haven’t removed the need for strong physical infrastructure.

Technology will continue to change. The foundations still need to provide:
• Capacity to grow
• Resilience where downtime matters
• Testing, labelling and clear documentation
• Infrastructure that can be maintained safely

With more than 35 years of telecommunications and network infrastructure experience, TNS Comms helps organisations build connectivity that is ready for what comes next.

In the telecoms and utilities sector, reactive maintenance might solve today’s problem but it often creates tomorrow’s cost.

Across the UK, unplanned network outages, emergency call-outs, and short-term patch repairs consistently prove more expensive than structured, long-term infrastructure planning. Studies across asset-heavy industries show reactive maintenance can cost 3–5 times more than planned preventative maintenance when you factor in downtime, labour premiums, lost productivity, and repeat failures.

For telecoms networks, the risks are even greater.

Unplanned fibre faults, emergency civils works, and rushed reinstatement not only increase operational costs but can impact:
• Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
• Customer experience and retention
• Health & Safety compliance
• Regulatory obligations
• Brand reputation

In contrast, proactive network management and long-term infrastructure planning allow operators to:
✔ Reduce total lifecycle costs
✔ Extend asset lifespan
✔ Improve network resilience
✔ Forecast budget more accurately
✔ Minimise service disruption

With the continued expansion of full fibre broadband, 5G rollout, and critical national infrastructure upgrades, the margin for reactive decision-making is shrinking. Network resilience, preventative maintenance, and strategic asset management are essential to businesses.

At TNS Comms (UK), we understand that sustainable telecom infrastructure isn’t built on quick fixes. It’s built on quality installation, compliance-led processes, and forward-thinking network planning.

If you're reviewing your network strategy, now is the time to ask: are you fixing problems or preventing them?

A complete external network build involves far more than simply installing cable. 🔧

From initial planning to final handover, six coordinated stages help ensure the network is safe, reliable and ready to perform:

1️⃣ Survey and design
2️⃣ Civils and ducting
3️⃣ Chambers and cabinets
4️⃣ Cable installation
5️⃣ Jointing and splicing
6️⃣ Testing and handover

Every stage matters. Careful planning, quality workmanship and thorough testing are what turn separate components into one complete network.

Save this checklist for your next project and follow TNS Comms for more telecoms and network-build insights.

Before the ceiling goes in, has anyone asked where the WiFi access points will go?

It sounds like a small detail, but it can make a significant difference to network performance.

In many UK office, education, warehouse and multi-occupancy fit-outs, access-point locations are considered after the lighting, HVAC, fire systems and ceiling grid have already been finalised. By then, the best position may be inaccessible or unsuitable.

That can result in:
• WiFi coverage gaps
• Poor roaming between access points
• Interference in high-density environments
• Extra cabling and remedial ceiling work
• Higher installation costs and project delays

Good enterprise WiFi is designed around coverage, capacity and how the building will actually be used. A predictive RF survey can help identify suitable locations during the design stage, followed by testing and validation once the fit-out is complete.

Early planning also means Cat6A structured cabling, PoE capacity and containment can be installed where they are needed. This is becoming increasingly important as organisations prepare for WiFi 6E, WiFi 7 and greater use of the 6 GHz spectrum in the UK.

At TNS Comms, we support survey-led access-point positioning, structured cabling and enterprise wireless infrastructure designed for reliable, future-ready connectivity.

When do access-point locations usually enter the conversation on your projects: during the design stage or after the ceiling is finished?

Enterprise Wi-Fi Designed for the building you actually have.

Every building presents a different wireless challenge. Construction materials, floor layouts, ceiling heights, user density and the location of existing network infrastructure can all affect Wi-Fi performance.

TNS Coms takes these factors into account when planning an enterprise wireless network. A detailed assessment helps identify coverage requirements, capacity demands, potential sources of interference and the best locations for access points.

The result is a Wi-Fi solution designed to provide:
• Reliable coverage across offices and shared spaces
• Consistent performance during busy periods
• Secure access for employees, guests and connected devices
• Smooth roaming as users move around the building
• Capacity to support future growth and changing technology

Careful planning can reduce dead zones, improve day-to-day connectivity and provide a stronger foundation for cloud applications, voice services, collaboration tools and smart building systems.

Ever wondered how fibre-optic cable travels hundreds—or even thousands—of metres through an underground duct? 🌬

Cable blowing combines controlled mechanical feeding with compressed airflow. The blowing machine guides the fibre into the duct, while fast-moving air creates drag along the cable’s surface—helping it travel smoothly with less friction and mechanical stress.

For a successful installation, the duct must be clean, dry, correctly sized and properly sealed. Even small leaks, tight bends or debris can reduce airflow and limit the achievable distance.

Swipe through to see how the process works—from the cable entering the machine to emerging at the other end.

Save this guide for later and share it with someone working in fibre installation.
