Step two is the one worth talking about, because it is the same instinct we spend all year trying to build in staff training.

The alert was easy to check. Everyone got it at the same time. It asked for nothing. gov.uk/alerts confirmed it in seconds.

The messages that cost businesses money have none of those qualities. They arrive at one person, they ask for something, and they land at a moment when nobody is around to sense check them.

A prediction you can hold us to: fake heatwave texts, wildfire donation appeals and "emergency payment" messages will appear over the next fortnight. They always do after a national event.

Same three questions, whatever the message:

Was I expecting this?
Is it asking me to do something?
Can I verify it another way?

Windows Server 2016 loses Microsoft support on 12 January 2027. After that there are no more security updates, which causes problems with cyber insurance and compliance. A safe migration takes three to six months to do properly.

That is why orange is worth a second look. Q4 leaves you weeks for a job that needs months.

One person can now check thousands of businesses for weaknesses at once, write the software to exploit what they find, and work out which of those businesses is worth the most.

That used to take an organised team.

Our MD Garry Brown spoke to The Sun about what AI is doing to the volume of cyber attacks, and why it matters more to a 60 person firm in the North East than most people assume.

For years, smaller organisations were passed over less because they were well defended and more because they took too much effort to attack. AI removes most of that effort.

The good news is that nothing about it changes what protects you. Patching, tested backups, multi factor authentication on everything, controlled admin access, and somebody actually reading the alerts.

The shortest cyber security training of all time. 👇

Ten simple habits that keep your business safer, on one page you can read in thirty seconds and share with your whole team.

No course to sit through. No login. Just the basics that stop most attacks: strong passwords, multi factor authentication, spotting phishing emails, and knowing when a phone call or a USB stick is a risk.

Phishing is still the most common attack on UK businesses, and it reaches people, not machines. A team that knows the tells is a team that is much harder to catch out.

A question came up on BBC Radio Tees last week: could a cyber attack happen to anybody, a huge company or just someone at home?

Our Managing Director Garry Brown's answer was clear. Yes, and it happens far more often than most people realise, because businesses that get hit usually keep it quiet. It feels bad for reputation, so they deal with it and move on without saying much. We've helped businesses across the North East recover from ransomware, fake emails, and attempts to steal money through stolen identities, more often than you'd think.

The one to watch right now is voice cloning. AI can clone a voice well enough to run a real phone conversation, asking someone to share bank details or make an urgent payment. It sounds like the right person. It even gets past voice recognition security systems that some organisations use.

Garry's take: both sides now have access to the same AI tools. Attackers use it to make scams more convincing. We use it to spot the unusual behaviour faster. It's a race that isn't going to stop.

Six years after a ransomware attack brought Redcar and Cleveland Council's systems to a standstill, the BBC has turned the full story into a podcast: Cyber Hack - The Conti Files, out now in six parts.

Bondgate IT worked with the BBC on the original investigation into what happened, so this week our Managing Director Garry Brown joined Gary Philipson on BBC Radio Tees to talk about it.

His advice for anyone listening, whether you're running a business or just at home:

Keep your systems updated.
Use a password manager.
If something feels urgent or too good to be true, stop and take five minutes. Most scams rely on rushing you.

And if the worst does happen, there's no shame in it. The businesses that recover best are the ones who planned for when it happens, not if.

The system most likely to catch your business out is usually the one that has never given you any trouble.

There is probably a server quietly running in the background right now. It logs people in, holds the shared files, and has done its job for years without complaint. If it is running Windows Server 2016, it has a deadline most business owners have not put on the agenda yet.

Microsoft stops issuing security patches for Server 2016 on 12 January 2027. After that, any new vulnerability stays open, with no fix coming.

For most businesses, the server itself is not the worry. It is everything attached to it. Your Cyber Essentials certificate, your ISO audit, the cyber insurance policy that quietly assumes you are running supported software. An unsupported server is the kind of detail an auditor will find and an insurer will question.

Here is the part people underestimate. Planned through 2026, a migration is calm and barely noticed. Forced in 2027, it becomes an emergency that costs more and breaks more.

By 2027 you will have migrated either way. The only question is whether it happens on your terms or under pressure.

Phishing emails used to give themselves away. Bad spelling, a strange sender address, a panicked demand to verify your account before it got deleted.

We even built a game out of how obvious they were.

That's changing fast.

Your team uses AI to write clearer, quicker emails. So do the criminals. The same tools tidying up everyday work are tidying up the scams landing in your inbox, and the obvious tells are vanishing.

The basics still hold:

A = Assume nothing

B = Believe no one

C = Challenge everything

A well-written email is not a safe email. A familiar name proves nothing.

But you cannot train your way to total safety. Everyone clicks the wrong thing eventually, so protection has to be layered: DMARC, email filtering, staff training, Cloud XDR, a SOC watching around the clock. Each layer covers the gap left by the last.

If you're relying on your people spotting the difference, you're relying on the one layer AI is weakening every month.

The last 12 months at Bondgate IT have been about impact.
