I’m going to say it — I’m getting sick of seeing these posts.

Every week another energy broker, card seller or so-called EPOS provider that entered the industry “five minutes ago” suddenly becomes an expert.

“You’re paying too much.”
“We’re disrupting payments.”
“We’ll revolutionise your EPOS.”
“We’ll save you thousands.”

The reality? Card processing rates are already at historically competitive levels.

Ask some of these new “experts” to explain interchange, scheme fees, acquiring margin, commercial cards, international cards, blended pricing or Interchange++ and see how detailed the answer gets.

And EPOS is even more concerning.

Hospitality technology isn’t just selling a till alongside a card terminal. It’s installations, networking, integrations, kitchen systems, handhelds, online ordering, training and — most importantly — support when a restaurant is packed on Saturday night.

Experience matters.

Being new to the industry isn’t the problem. Pretending experience doesn’t matter while chasing a quick commission is.

Merchants should stop asking only “what’s your rate?” and start asking:

“How long have you actually been doing this, and will you still be here when I need you?”

Payments and EPOS should be about long-term relationships, not the next quick buck.
