Got in shop at 6am today to tackle this lot..... little look behind the scenes at some of today’s repair schedule — and a perfect example of why “console repair” can mean very different things!

🎮 Xbox Series S – No Power / Board Repair

This one took us right down to component level. Fault finding led us into the power circuitry and a failed MPS2127 power management IC. IC removed, pads cleaned and prepared, replacement fitted and the console brought back to life.
Currently happily downloading its updates ready for final testing. ✅

🧹 PS5 – Seriously overdue a service!
And then there was this…
That fan isn't supposed to come with its own carpet. 😂

Years of dust had built up throughout the cooling system, heavily restricting airflow through the fan and heatsink. Full strip-down, cooling system cleaned and everything serviced properly before reassembly.

🌡️ And a reminder about PS5 liquid metal…

The photos also show exactly why we don't recommend simply blowing compressed air through a console and calling it a “service”.

The PS5 uses liquid metal between the APU and heatsink, and over time its distribution/contact can deteriorate. A proper service means actually getting inside the machine, inspecting it and dealing with the cooling system correctly — not just making the vents look clean.

Loads of others in too, switch lite, standard switch, ps4 and ps4 pro too.
From microscopic IC replacement under the scope to removing enough dust to knit another PS5… it's all part of the job. 😂🔬

Three completely different faults, but all requiring a bit more than simply swapping parts.

🎮 Nintendo Switch 2 – Liquid Damage

This Switch 2 came in with liquid damage. With these only having launched last June and now just starting to fall outside their original warranty period, there still isn't a huge amount of repair information or real-world failure data available for them.

After stripping the console down, the board was thoroughly cleaned and put through the ultrasonic cleaner. However, inspection under the microscope still showed traces of liquid contamination underneath the NAND.

At that point there was only one proper way to deal with it.

➡️ NAND removed
➡️ Board and chip thoroughly cleaned
➡️ NAND reballed
➡️ Reinstalled
➡️ Console rebuilt and fully tested

Back up and running. ✅

🥽 Oculus Controller – Multiple Repairs

This one had taken a bit of punishment.

The internal button hinge was broken, and the analogue stick ribbon connector had been completely ripped from the PCB, taking some of the traces with it.

The damaged traces were repaired, the connector reinstated and the button mechanism repaired.

Fully functional again and back with the customer. ✅

🎮 PS5 – Previous HDMI Repair

This PS5 was sent to us by another local repair shop after a previous HDMI port replacement elsewhere had gone very wrong.

Unfortunately, this is something we see far too often. A HDMI replacement isn't simply a case of getting a new port to stick to the board. Damage to pads, traces or surrounding components can quickly turn a straightforward repair into considerably more work.

The previous work was removed, the damage rectified and the HDMI installation completed properly.

Reassembled, tested and back to the customer working as it should. ✅

This is the side of repair work we enjoy most — microscope work, board-level diagnostics and repairing the damage that isn't always visible from the outside.

🎮 GTA VI IS COMING… IS YOUR PS5 READY FOR IT? 👀

This PS5 came into PlayBox Console Services with no signal due to a damaged HDMI port, but once we opened it up, the HDMI issue wasn't the only thing needing attention. 😬

Just look at the amount of dust packed into the fan, heatsink and internal airflow system. The liquid metal had also seen better days.

So while it was apart:

🔧 HDMI fault repaired
🧹 Full internal strip-down & deep clean
💨 Fan and heatsink cleared
🌡️ Liquid metal cleaned and correctly redistributed
✅ Reassembled, tested and back up and running

And with GTA VI on the horizon, now is a very good time to think about the condition of those early-release PS5s.

A lot of launch and early-model consoles have already spent 5+ years pulling dust through themselves, often without ever being opened or serviced. We have PS5 slims suffering overheat too so its not just the early models.

GTA VI is likely to be one of the most demanding games many of these consoles have ever been asked to run for hours at a time. A heatsink blanketed in dust and a cooling system struggling for airflow isn't exactly how you want to head into Vice City. 😂

You wouldn't wait until your car overheats before checking the cooling system — your PS5 deserves the same treatment.

Another PlayBox rescue completed today! 🔧🎮

This PS5 came in needing an HDMI port replacement, but while it was on the bench it was obvious it desperately needed a full service too.

🤢 Just look at the amount of dust packed into the fan and heatsink! With the airflow almost completely blocked, it's no surprise these consoles end up overheating.

✅ New HDMI port fitted under the microscope.
✅ Full internal strip-down and deep clean.
✅ Heatsink cleared of years of dust and debris.
✅ Fresh liquid metal applied where required.
✅ Fully tested and back to running cool with a perfect video output.

This is exactly why I always recommend having your PS5 serviced every couple of years (or sooner if you smoke, have pets, or keep it standing vertically in a dusty environment). A blocked heatsink can cause overheating, excessive fan noise and, in some cases, permanent damage if left long enough.

🔧 Repair of the Day – PS5 Fan Connector Reconstruction 🔧

This PS5 originally came in overheating and shutting itself down.

The customer had attempted a DIY clean beforehand but unfortunately ripped the fan connector clean off the motherboard. Nothing was mentioned when it was booked in, but it became pretty obvious once the console was stripped down.
Rather than replacing the motherboard or running jumper wires everywhere, this one received a full pad and anchor reconstruction:
✅ Rebuilt the damaged anchor pads.
✅ Reconstructed the missing signal pads.
✅ Reinstalled the original fan connector. ✅ Verified all connections and fan operation.
✅ Completed the full internal service and deep clean that had never quite been finished.

As always, the customer received photos throughout every stage of the repair, so they could see exactly what work had been carried out and where their money was being spent.

⚠️ A reminder: Cleaning a PS5 isn't difficult, but disconnecting the fan cable incorrectly can turn a simple maintenance job into a board-level repair. Always release the connector gently—never pull on the wires.

This week has been one of those where no two jobs were the same... apart from the 13 overheating ps5s and 7 xbox series consoles.
