Another smashed laptop screen brought back to life! 💻✨

This display was badly cracked and unusable, but after fitting a new replacement screen, the laptop is looking and working as it should again.

💻 Would you know if the “new” laptop you bought was actually nearly 10 years old?

A customer recently brought us a laptop purchased as new from Amazon.

When we checked it, we found it was running an Intel Core i7 7th Generation vPro processor — technology dating back to around 2017.

That immediately raised some questions.

There’s a big difference between a genuinely new, current laptop and an older used, refurbished or “new old stock” machine being advertised as new.

When checking a laptop, we can look at:

🔍 The exact processor and age of the model
🔍 Manufacturer serial number and warranty history
🔍 SSD power-on hours
🔍 Battery age, capacity and cycle count
🔍 BIOS information
🔍 Signs of previous use

There’s another important issue too: most 7th-generation Intel processors aren’t officially supported for Windows 11, while standard Windows 10 support ended in October 2025.

If you’ve bought a laptop from Amazon or another online marketplace and aren’t sure exactly what you’ve been sold, get it checked before assuming it’s genuinely new.

💻 Another MacBook Air screen replacement underway!

This MacBook came in with a damaged display, so it’s out with the old screen and in with the replacement. 🔧🍏

With laptops like these, a damaged display can make it feel like the whole machine is ready for the bin — but that doesn't necessarily mean it's time to replace it.

A new screen can give an otherwise perfectly good MacBook a new lease of life, without the expense of buying another machine.

🔋 Sometimes the problem isn’t the one you were asked to fix…

This 2015 MacBook Pro came into the workshop for a macOS reinstallation because it wasn’t working properly.

As part of our routine inspection before starting any work, we noticed something else—the screen wouldn’t close fully.

After removing the bottom cover, the cause was immediately obvious.

The battery had swollen significantly, expanding enough to push against the inside of the case and stop the lid from closing. A swollen lithium battery isn’t just an inconvenience; it can become a serious safety hazard if left unchecked.

This is a great example of why every device that comes into our workshop receives a thorough inspection before any repairs begin. Sometimes we uncover issues that could have become much more serious if they had gone unnoticed.

If your laptop has any of these symptoms:

* ⚠️ The lid no longer closes properly
* ⚠️ The trackpad feels raised or difficult to click
* ⚠️ The bottom case appears to bulge
* ⚠️ The keyboard feels uneven

…stop using it and have it checked as soon as possible.
