How Can Design Strategy Raise the Appeal of Vegan Food Packages for an Omnivorous Market? An Exploration into the Factors That Influence Negative Consumer Perceptions of Plant-Based Food.

This dissertation investigates the barriers faced by an omnivorous consumer market when considering vegan food and explores the cultural and psychological influencers of these obstacles. The research project aimed to discover if graphic design strategies used within plant-based packaging can raise the appeal of this type of food which can benefit both the environment and consumer health.

This campaign highlights the current state of decline in the Amazon by focusing on the predicament of Ranitomeya Uakarii, a species of poison dart frog that is endangered from the current extinction event happening in the rainforest.

Through a bright colour palette based on the species’ unique colouration vibrant vector illustrations and bold typography, the project aims to raise awareness and evoke sympathy for this particular species of frog. A booklet, poster and promotional item in the form of an interactive board game were produced. FSC Certified and recycled paper stock were used throughout the final artefacts.

Gutted we didn't get a physical exhibition but I love the theme of the wee birds escaping from their cages—finishing a degree during lockdown has been a rollercoaster of emotions😅

From exploring the uncomfortable realities of factory farming through the lens of speciesism, the project aims to evoke an emotional reaction and stimulate intellectual discussion surrounding the ethics of speciesism in the hope of encouraging the target market to reflect on their own attitudes towards farmed species.

Ultimately, the project aims to change the perception of the target audience in consideration of the way food is produced, and to encourage a change of behaviour by reducing animal products and trying more plant-based to reduce impact on the environment, animal suffering and zoonotic disease transmission.
