This shape is clearly imperfect. But for me, it’s a joy to look at.
It was drawn by one of my very first students, someone for whom programming did not come naturally.
In Python, if the code isn’t well-indented, it breaks mercilessly.
That alone can be overwhelming for beginners.
She understood the idea of loops but couldn’t yet create anything new with them.
So, we kept practicing, the same concept, in different forms.
Until one day, out of thin air, she created this shape from her own imagination.
It’s simple.
But it’s a sign of something powerful:
knowledge being consolidated… and turning into creativity.

The rosette is believed to have first appeared in architectural decoration during the 9th century, at the height of the Islamic Golden Age. Over time, these patterns became increasingly sophisticated and constructing them by hand requires both precise compass work and great patience.

I initially coded this generator based on S. Kaplan’s paper (2000) and decided to experiment with AI (Gemini 3 Pro Preview). It struggled repeatedly when implemented in TypeScript and only succeeded after several iterations in Python. It was a reminder that while AI can be a powerful assistant, it still relies on an understanding of structure and intent.

Perhaps one downside of AI is that it can make complexity feel effortless, which may alter how we experience beauty. To truly appreciate the richness and precision of these patterns, try drawing one by hand or coding it yourself 😊.

The philosophy

We live in exciting times for learning to code !

Powerful tools have removed much of the friction between an idea and its expression. We no longer need to get lost in details before creating something meaningful. By grounding our work in solid fundamentals and utilizing relevant tools we can focus on ideas, structure, and creativity: the parts that truly bring visions to life.

In a world that is changing this quickly, learning cannot remain rigid or strictly linear. Tools evolve, technology shifts, and the way we build things adapts constantly. Learning to code today must embrace this reality. We help children learn how to adapt, explore, and use tools thoughtfully, rather than follow fixed paths that quickly become outdated.
