It's always exciting spotting our work out in the real world!

This summer, we’ve been working with Southern Co-op on a campaign designed to encourage more people into stores, with the chance to win one of 10,000 free shops.

With a summer incentive like this, the campaign needed to be noticed. We created a bright, playful look that felt at home within the Co-op brand, built around the familiar visual of a shopping receipt and flexible enough to work across lots of different formats.

We’ve brought it to life across everything from shelf-edge displays and in-store signage to windows, outdoor advertising and digital, including a YouTube ad.

It's been brilliant seeing something that started in our Studio appearing in so many different places across the South – and yes, we've been taking photos whenever we spot it...!

Sometimes the best opportunities for progress come from paying attention to what people are already doing.

The Heinz ketchup bottle is a great example. Rather than starting with a redesign, they looked at how people were actually using the product, where they were struggling and, later, how they'd started finding their own ways around those frustrations. Those observations gave them something much more useful than a brief for a new bottle, they gave them a problem worth solving.

Because spotting an issue is one thing. The interesting part is understanding why it's happening, what it tells you about your audience and how you can use that insight to make something better. For Heinz, that thinking led to changes in the bottle itself. First, making it easier for children to use independently, and later turning the whole thing on its head (quite literally!) after noticing that customers were already storing their bottles upside down.

It's a great example of how creativity doesn't always have to begin with a blank sheet of paper. Sometimes the strongest ideas are already there in the behaviours, frustrations and workarounds of the people you're designing for. Understanding those things first gives creativity somewhere useful to go – and gives every decision that follows a reason for being there.

Working on anniversary branding campaigns comes with a unique challenge – how do you move things forward without losing sight of where they started?

For organisations with decades of history behind them, change has to be handled carefully. Modernising a brand shouldn’t mean losing what made it recognisable in the first place.

That was exactly the challenge behind the Volunteer Cadet Corps' 125th anniversary campaign; the identity needed to feel modern and relevant to today’s cadets, whilst still respecting the organisation’s history and heritage.

The iconography, consisting of a torch, belt and crown, was drawn directly from the original crest. Rather than reinventing those elements, we refined them using simplified forms and more consistent geometry, maintaining the symbolism whilst improving clarity.

The colour palette also stayed rooted in Royal Navy heritage, with the addition of a gold accent to subtly reflect the significance of the milestone.

Simplicity within the design was important from a practical point of view too. The design needed to feel contemporary and confident, but also flexible enough to work across digital platforms, print materials and ceremonial settings throughout what has been a packed programme of anniversary celebrations.

Congratulations to the Volunteer Cadet Corps as they continue marking their 125th year. It’s been a privilege to play a small part in shaping this next chapter.

When people hear the term user experience, they often think about websites and apps. In reality, it's much broader than that. UX is really about how people feel every time they interact with a business, whether that's finding information, making a purchase or simply trying to get something done.

It's often the frustrating moments that stand out most. A confusing navigation menu, a form that's difficult to complete, an unexpected error message or having to click one too many times can all interrupt what should have been a simple experience. None of those things feels significant on its own, but together they can leave people feeling frustrated and, more importantly, less confident in the business behind it.

The irony is that when an experience works well, most people don't notice it at all. They find what they need, complete what they came to do and move on without giving it a second thought. That's exactly what good UX is supposed to do: remove the friction, not draw attention to itself.

Those seemingly small decisions have a much bigger impact than they might appear. They influence whether a business feels straightforward to deal with, whether people trust what they're seeing and whether they'd choose to come back again in the future.

The best user experiences don't happen by accident. They're built through hundreds of thoughtful decisions, each one making things just that little bit clearer, simpler and easier for the person on the other side.

Take a look below to explore why great UX is about so much more than good design.

Over the last few weeks, we've started work with two very different organisations: Co-op and Boatcare.

Different sectors, different objectives and different challenges to solve.

Working across a range of industries means no two projects are ever quite the same. Every organisation brings its own context, ambitions and complexities, which means every approach needs to be shaped around what will work for them.

Despite the differences, both partnerships started in the same place: understanding where they are now, where they want to get to, and the challenges standing in the way.

We're looking forward to getting to know both teams better and supporting them over the coming months.

We had a lovely surprise in the office this morning!

The team at Stellar Despatch recently ran a charity sweepstake during the World Cup, and our very own Caroline drew Spain, who went on to lift the trophy.

Today they stopped by to present a fantastic £500 donation to our house charity, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, helping to support the incredible work they do across our local communities.

A huge thank you to everyone at Stellar Despatch for such a generous initiative, and congratulations to Caroline on a very lucky draw!

Some of the best ideas we've worked on haven't come from one person, they've come from conversations.

A designer sees something differently to a strategist. A developer spots a challenge no one else has considered. An account manager brings the client's perspective. Sometimes one question is all it takes to send an idea in a completely different direction.

That's why many of our projects begin with kick-off meetings and creative workshops. Before anyone starts designing or building, we bring the right people together to share ideas, challenge assumptions and look at the brief from different angles.

When everyone works in isolation, projects can end up following the path you'd expect. But when different perspectives are involved from the beginning, ideas are tested more thoroughly, explored more openly and often become something stronger than any one person could have developed alone. It isn't always the quickest part of the process, but it's often one of the most valuable.

Because good collaboration isn't about everyone agreeing. It's about giving the best ideas room to become even better.

We've designed brands.
We've designed websites.
We've designed campaigns.

This year, we designed a lion.

Over the past two months, our Head of Design & Creative, Daisy Barker, has transformed a blank fibreglass lion into a bold celebration of Portsmouth as part of the Pride of Portsmouth public art trail, marking the city’s centenary.

Inspired by Portsmouth’s culture, humour and heritage, the design is packed with references to the city’s landmarks, icons and character. From Fratton Park and the Spinnaker Tower to tattoo-inspired artwork and local sayings, it’s a colourful celebration of the place we're proud to call home.

We're incredibly proud to see Daisy's lion now on display as part of the trail, where thousands of people will discover it across the city this summer.

At MindWorks, creativity isn't confined to branding, campaigns and digital experiences. Sometimes it spills out onto the streets and becomes part of the city itself. If you're exploring the Pride of Portsmouth trail this summer, keep an eye out for Daisy's lion ‘Cushty’, and let us know your favourite detail.

Congratulations Daisy, and thank you to Portsmouth City Council, Wild in Art and First Bus Solent for making projects like this possible.

Every year, EO Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate being an employee-owned business and reflect on what that means to us.

It's a chance to step away from our usual day-to-day, spend time together, and recognise the contributions everyone makes to MindWorks.

This year's celebrations included walking the MindWorks Mile, EO-themed puzzles, spin the wheel and a colleague appreciation vote (congratulations to Hannah!), along with plenty of opportunities to catch up over a sharing lunch and enjoy time together as a team.

It was a brilliant afternoon, and here are a few highlights 📸

Twenty-five years is a long time in any industry - but especially in marketing, where technology, platforms and ways of working have changed beyond recognition, it's even more remarkable.

This month, Michelle is celebrating 25 years at MindWorks!

Over that time, she's seen the business evolve, supported countless clients, and played a significant role in shaping the agency we are today.

From launching the Mary Rose Museum, to organising pan-European vintage car rallies, Christmas lights switch-ons and family events, it's safe to say there has been plenty of variety along the way. Between 2018 and 2025, Michelle also led the company as Managing Director, helping steer the business through one of its most challenging periods during Covid.

As Michelle puts it: "If variety is the spice of life, then my time at MindWorks has been five chillies!"

Congratulations Michelle, and thank you for everything you've contributed to MindWorks over the last 25 years 💙
