Alexa Whitten Author Maker I help people become authors. I offer everything from writing help to design, print and publishing. Unfortunately the book was awful.

Our mission is to help all aspiring authors get their book 'out of their heads and into print' by offering a bespoke service, be it coaching or production. In 2005 - whilst at a seminar - a client of Alexa's boss (she was employed full time by him) proudly produced a book that he had written, and formatted himself. The cover was mismatched, the text inside was all different sizes and the page numb

ers weren't in the right place. Even though the author was really pleased with his publication - it sparked an idea and within two months, Alexa formed The Book Refinery - and has never looked back. Her and her team have now worked on hundreds of books, from business 'how to', to fiction and childrens' publications. They are passionate about helping people become authors and they strive to produce the best looking books possible.

Tony came to me asking for help getting his book ready for Amazon Kindle.

He told me the synopsis of the book - and I worked on the cover…

The feedback he’s been getting is fabulous and I’m so happy to have helped him get the right vibe and feel for the story.

My work gives me such varied projects that my ‘hot off the press’ pile looks gorgeous.

I’ve got an anthology of poems, a dark twisty novel and a reflection of faith through courage and friendship.

Helping authors is my passion… and I’m so fortunate to play my part in getting these books out there.

For the past 8 years I’ve been helping Warwick University with their yearly anthology. And this years cover is glorious....

Tasked with writing, editing and cover design the anthology cohort pulls all of their writing together and I typeset and collage the cover ready for print.

Getting your book laid out properly is super important…. Especially if you want your readers to enjoy your books.

I see so many badly designed books - no inside margins, uneven spacing and font choice that makes it hard to read.

Amazon may ‘help you upload your words’ but if it looks sh@t, then readers won’t get past page 1.

Different books require different treatment.

In fact good layout doesn’t even register… most don’t even notice it, and that’s when you know you’ve done a good job.

Being able to lay out a book isn’t something you can do in a day… and honestly a word doc uploaded to KDP will look crap.
