A lot of local businesses build a website and forget Google Maps entirely 📍

Those two things work together. A Google Maps listing set up around the same time as your website launch can help Google understand where you operate and who you're for — and that can make a real difference to how quickly your site starts showing up in local searches.

The website went live. Everyone relaxed. Then quietly, things started slipping. 😬

This is one of the most common patterns I see with small business websites. The site looks fine on the surface, but behind the scenes plugins are outdated, backups haven't been tested, and performance has been slowly creeping downwards. None of it feels urgent — until something actually breaks, or enquiries dry up and nobody can quite explain why.

The fix isn't complicated. It's just routine. Regular updates done safely, backups that are actually tested (not just 'switched on'), and periodic checks on speed and mobile usability. That's what keeps a WordPress or WooCommerce site doing the job it was built for. 🛠️

Ignoring WordPress updates is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes I see. 🚨

It starts small. A few red notification badges in the admin. A plugin update you meant to do last week. Then weeks become months, and suddenly updating anything feels risky because so much has piled up. That's when things break — and fixing a broken site always costs far more than keeping it ticking over properly.

One concrete thing you can do today: check your WordPress dashboard and note how many updates are sitting there. If it's more than a handful, or if core WordPress itself is out of date, that's your site asking for attention. 🔧

A common mistake I see with local businesses is putting all the effort into the website… then leaving Google Business Profile half-finished (or not claimed at all). 📍 Meanwhile, the “map results” are where people tap 👉 Call, Directions, Book.

💡 Concrete takeaway: make sure your Google Business Profile has consistent details, the right categories, proper services listed, decent photos, and regular updates — because for loads of searches, that listing is the *first impression*, not your homepage.
