The Glasgow School of Art new zine, Source Materials is intended as a guide for undergraduate applicants. It documents the process students go through in creating a body of work. A glimpse behind the scenes into a working studio space, a visual train of thought, it takes on the form of a zine to capture the raw unfiltered energy of the process of making and creating.
To extend these thoughts around bringing to life the studio-based creative process and experience, we dipped into the idea of sketchbooks and zines. Keeping it lo-fi and firmly rooted in the creative process, we asked our printer to go back to basics and use the oldest and most traditional printing press on site. This allowed us to achieve an aesthetic that echoed the core concept.
We specified a new uncoated paper called Fedrigoni Arena Rough, which has a textured surface, a bit like old-fashioned cartridge paper. When printed on the old two colour press this paper behaves very differently than it would on a contemporary press, perfectly replicating the character of fanzines or newspaper print. The cover has two layers printing on both sides of Fedrigoni Golden Star K simulator stock, allowing us to deliver a layered story that then continues throughout the text pages - taking us on an almost physical journey through the creative process.
