Please share with your friends - people fall for the new scam!

If you get an email like this from somebody you know:

"Hi
Can i ask a quick favour from you?
Regards"

Followed by another email if you reply:

"Good Morning

Happy to hear back from you, Can you help me get an iTunes gift card for my Niece who had Heart operation some days ago. It’s her birthday today and I totally forgot I can't do this now because I'm currently on a short trip. I tried purchasing online but unfortunately I had no luck with that. Can you help get it from any supermarket, Sainsbury, Tesco & stores close to you? Kindly let me know if you can handle this on my behalf? So, I can let you know what to do with the voucher once you have them. Am only looking to spend £200, I promise to pay back as soon as i get back.

Kindly let me know if you can handle this,
Regards
********* "

Please ignore and phone your friend, who supposedly sent you this email. Don't try to email them as more likely they are not in control of their email.

In the cloud we trust
I have noticed, that a lot of my customers don’t use cloud storage because they can’t decide which cloud to use or they don’t trust any. Cloud storage has been around for years and has proven to be very reliable. At the beginning of the cloud revolution, some companies went bust or got rid of unlimited storage they sold their customers, replacing it with limited storage. Now cloud storage is much more stable and big companies are very generous with the cloud storage they offer their clients. If you got Microsoft Office 365 family, you get up to 6 users with 1TB of storage each, already included. Amazon Prime members get unlimited full-resolution photo storage. Google and DropBox offer small amounts of storage for free, with paid subscriptions for more storage. If you need to save a lot of data, you can look at iDrive, currently running a limited offer - 10TB for £3 for the first year ( https://www.idrive.com/idrive/signup/el/techradar95?subtag=trd-gb-2330150642763345000 )with support for unlimited devices.
It is much more practical to configure your new laptop to save your pictures and documents to the cloud, rather than relying on plugging an external hard drive and running backups on a regular basis.
If you need more help in choosing and configuring cloud storage, please contact Primo Computers (01483 860 777)

MacBook 2010 with booting problem. Checked that hard drive was failing. Upgraded with SSD drive, loaded the latest OS available for that model, installed latest updates, cleaned inside. Total price £90 (including SSD). I told customer that other places charge £150 to £180 for the same job but I always try to do it as cheap as possible.

How to spot suspicious emails
Criminals want to convince you to do something which they can use to their advantage. In a scam email, their goal is often to convince you to click a link. Once clicked, you may be sent to a dodgy website which could download viruses onto your computer or steal your passwords and personal information. They often pretend to be from some organisation you trust or person you know. This could be your Internet Service Provider (ISP), local council, or a friend in need. These scam messages can be hard to spot. They are designed to get you to react without thinking. They usually apply urgency - you are given a limited time to respond (such as 'within 24 hours' or 'immediately'). And they often threaten you with fines or other negative consequences. Criminals often use threatening language, make false claims of support, or tease you into wanting to find out more.
To protect others from being affected, you should report suspicious emails by forwarding them to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service at [email protected].
If you think a message is genuine, visit the official website, log in to your account, or phone their advertised phone number. Don't use the links or contact details in the message you have been sent.

Scammers are still calling Godalming residents.

I warned about those scams a few times before, but I just had a call myself today and decided to play along to see if anything has changed. The caller claimed they are calling me from BT Openreach because they “detected lots of errors on my broadband line”. Next, they wanted to show proof that my computer has generated lots of errors because of the bad connection. They instructed me to press the Windows key and R to bring up the Run box on my system, and to enter command to open Windows Event Viewer. The caller asked how many errors were listed and tried convincing me that the computer was compromised. I know that most of the errors are harmless and appear on most computers, but I pretended that I was convinced that the situation is serious and that I needed help. I just wanted to see what Web page they will ask me to go to or what tools to use to gain access to my computer in order to report them. And sure enough, next I was told to bring up the Run box again and type “WWW.hubs8.webs.com”, which opened the web page with links to take remote control of the PC or MAC. I was then told to click on “Server” link at which point I just put the phone down. Unfortunately, they learned from the past and now just use free websites on website builder platform webs.com. Their web page doesn’t have a company name or phone number. The number they called from 01715252987 is probably one of the many VOIP numbers they use.
I can just repeat what I posted over 4 years ago:
“Don’t provide any personal information or allow a stranger to guide you to a certain webpage or download software to give them remote access. They might even know your name from the phone book, or some marketing list. They know nothing about your computer. Never give them your credit card or bank details. If you are called - just put the phone down. It is not a legitimate call. If you suspect that your computer is infected - run a scan with up-to-date security software or in cases of severe infection – contact your local IT support company.
Be safe.”
