Be careful who you talk to at conferences: Security researchers claim they were targeted by cyber criminals after DEF CON event

Visitors to Black Hat/DEF CON earlier this month were targeted after the event by cyber criminals posing as a well-known crypto media executive.

The X account sent a direct message to one Huntress security researcher claiming to be CoinDesk's VP and head of marketing, asking for help with an upcoming conference.

While the researcher cottoned on to the scam immediately, they carried on engaging with the scammer to check out the tactics they were using. This involved a Google Doc featuring a custom Google Apps Script sidebar designed to guide them through the ex*****on of malware.

Microsoft is dropping its Excel Copilot function after only a year - and without ever getting a full public launch

Microsoft is dropping its COPILOT function in Excel as part of its wide-ranging overhauls to the AI platform.

In a Message Center alert, the company warned users that the tool will be pulled on September 14, 2026.

First announced in August 2025 and originally set for launch in January 2027, the tool has been in testing for over a year with Frontier and Insider users, but Microsoft has apparently decided not to move forward with its service.

UK manufacturers urged to bolster resilience as cyber threats surge

Manufacturing firms have been urged to bolster resilience capabilities after new research shows nearly one-third (30%) have experienced a cyber incident in the last year.

A study from Make UK, a trade group representing the manufacturing and engineering industries, highlighted both the growing threats faced by organizations as well as the impact of cyber attacks.

Crucially, many manufacturers appear to be dangerously underprepared. The study noted that only around half of organizations have incident response plans in place, while almost one-third don’t have cyber insurance or are “unsure whether they are covered”.

'Patients are ready for this': New study reveals 90% of NHS staff use AI at work — and most patients are happy with it

NHS staff are increasingly using AI tools to improve workflows and handle admin tasks, and claim that patients are positive about the development, new research has claimed.

A survey of 1,000 healthcare professionals working in the NHS by Heidi found 90% of respondents revealing they are using AI in clinical work, with healthcare professionals driving the change, with nearly two-thirds (65%) adopting AI to assist in their workflow.

Rising administrative burdens in recent years may have contributed to the use of AI to assist in tasks, although it seems some AI use is happening regardless of official policies.
