New scam targeting iPhone users.
The scam is simple: a text that appears to come from Apple alerts you to Apple Pay fraud and gives a number to call to stop the transaction. “Experts say the scam relies on urgency, impersonation, and convincing personal details.” Calling connects to a criminal who may pose as Apple, law enforcement, a bank, or a card issuer. The calls and numbers are fake.
Apple warns scammers may claim they’ll help reverse “unauthorised charges using Apple Pay” and then link to a fake website to steal credentials. Apple adds it "will never ask you to log in to any website, or to tap Accept in the two-factor authentication dialogue, or to provide your password, device passcode or two-factor authentication code, or to enter it into any website.”
This isn’t limited to Apple, Microsoft, Google and other big tech users face similar schemes. The companies say they do not send unsolicited texts asking you to call support or give sensitive information.
Be careful out there!
