Do you know what back EMF is and why it matters in access control? 🤔

Many electric locks use a coil to operate the locking mechanism.

When the power is switched off, the energy stored in that coil is released as a sudden voltage spike, known as back electromotive force (back EMF). ⚡

Over time, these spikes can damage the equipment responsible for energising and de-energising the lock.

That’s why every lock manufactured by CDVI is supplied with built-in back-EMF protection. 💡

A pre-fitted varistor helps suppress the voltage spike, protecting the equipment and supporting dependable, long-term performance.

One of the key decisions when selecting a locking solution for an access control project is whether to use a fail safe or fail secure lock.

But how do you know which type is right for each project? 🤔

A good way to remember the difference is: fail safe locks are designed to keep people safe. 💡

👉 Fail safe locks are best suited to external doors, emergency exits, and stairwell doors.

Any door that must allow free movement in the event of a fire alarm or power failure should have a fail safe lock.

👉 Fail secure locks are best suited for areas containing valuable assets or sensitive data.

IT server rooms, finance offices, and stock rooms are commonly equipped with fail secure locks.
