The people are what make an event. 📷

When I'm photographing an event, I love looking for moments in a large room.

There might be lots happening at once, so I'm always looking for ways to bring the people, the surroundings and the details together in one photograph.

This photograph from the Manchester Board Game Festival is a good example.

I liked the way the three players were completely focused on their games, while the event backdrop and branding were still visible in the background.

It's a simple moment, but it says quite a lot about the event.

The walks are suitable for different experience levels, with guidance on camera settings, composition and different ways of approaching a scene.

I've been adding more of my recent sports and event photography projects to the blog.

This week, I'm sharing a look back at photographing the Scissett Legends football match and league match.

Football photography brings plenty of action, but there's also the challenge of anticipating what is about to happen and finding those moments that help tell the story of the game.

I've shared some of my favourite photographs and a little more about the experience of photographing local football.

The photographs I remember most aren't always the biggest moments. 📸

Sometimes it's a reaction, a conversation, a laugh, or simply the way people are enjoying an experience together.

I recently photographed at the Manchester Board Game Festival, and there were plenty of these moments happening around the games themselves.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about event photography. It's not just about photographing the activity, it's about watching what is happening around it, anticipating those small moments and capturing the people who bring an event to life.

A moment can last only a few seconds, but a photograph can preserve it for years.

This is one of the moments that caught my eye from the festival.

There's a lot that goes into creating a photograph before the shutter is pressed. 📷

When I'm photographing an event, I'm constantly looking at what's happening around me, where people are standing, the light, the background, what's happening next and where I need to be to capture the moment.

👍Sometimes it's about anticipating a reaction.
👍Sometimes it's finding the right position for a group photograph.
👍And sometimes it's simply noticing a small moment happening between people.

I enjoy the challenge of being present, watching what's happening and finding photographs that tell the story of the occasion.

That's one of the things that keeps photography interesting for me, you never quite know what the next photograph will be.

Photography Tip: Don't be afraid to give people direction ✨

When photographing people at events, a little direction can make a big difference.

For group photographs, simple prompts such as moving closer together, turning slightly towards each other or asking everyone to look at the camera can help create a more natural and connected photograph.

The aim isn't always to make everyone pose perfectly. It's about helping people feel comfortable so you can capture a photograph that reflects the occasion.

It's something I use regularly when photographing events, teams and celebrations.

The best event photographs aren't always the obvious ones. 📷

✨Sometimes it's the person laughing with a friend.
✨A volunteer making sure everything runs smoothly.
✨A proud reaction.
✨A conversation between guests.
✨Or simply the atmosphere of a room full of people enjoying themselves.

These are the moments that can easily be missed when you're busy organising an event.

That's why I love event photography, looking beyond the main action and capturing the people and moments that make an occasion what it is.

Every project I work on has a different reason behind it.

Some are about capturing people coming together.

Some are about helping someone build confidence with their camera.

Some help a business promote what it does.

Others preserve an experience, celebrate an achievement or support a local community.

Whether I'm behind the camera or working on a website, I enjoy creating something that has a purpose beyond simply looking good.
