Over the past few weeks I’ve spoken with several organisations reviewing their approach to cybersecurity.

Interestingly, many conversations start in the same place:

▶️ A supplier security questionnaire.

▶️ A cyber insurance renewal.

▶️ Or a growing awareness that cyber risk is now a business risk, not just an IT issue.

For many organisations, the first step is establishing a clear baseline of security controls.

That’s why frameworks like Cyber Essentials are often where the journey begins.

They provide a structured way to implement the fundamental protections that reduce exposure to common attacks.

Not as a tick-box exercise — but as a practical starting point for improving cyber resilience.

If you’re considering Cyber Essentials or reviewing your organisation’s current security posture, then book in some time with David on the link below.

Many business leaders have heard of Cyber Essentials, but fewer are clear on what it actually protects organisations against.

At its core, Cyber Essentials focuses on reducing the likelihood of the most common cyber attacks affecting UK organisations.

That includes things like:

• malware infections
• phishing-related compromises
• exploitation of unpatched systems
• credential-based attacks

In other words, the types of attacks that tend to cause the greatest disruption to businesses.

Rather than attempting to address every possible cyber threat, Cyber Essentials concentrates on five key areas of security control:

• firewalls and internet gateways
• secure configuration
• user access control
• malware protection
• patch management

The goal is straightforward.

To ensure organisations have a solid baseline of protection against the attacks most businesses actually encounter.

In cybersecurity, the fundamentals remain one of the most effective defences.

A quick cyber resilience check for business leaders.

If you can confidently answer “yes” to these questions, your organisation is already ahead of many.

1️⃣ Are all company devices regularly patched and updated automatically?

2️⃣ Is multi-factor authentication enabled for email and key systems?

3️⃣ Do staff avoid using administrator accounts for everyday work?

4️⃣ Are devices protected by reliable malware protection?

5️⃣ Are internet-facing systems properly secured and monitored?

These are not advanced security measures.

They are simply the fundamentals.

But interestingly, these same controls are responsible for preventing a large proportion of common cyber attacks.

That’s exactly why frameworks like Cyber Essentials focus on them.

Strong cybersecurity often starts with asking a simple question:

Are the basics already in place?

One pattern appears regularly when talking to growing businesses about cyber security.

Security often becomes a priority after a scare.

Sometimes it’s a ransomware incident affecting a peer organisation.

Sometimes it’s a supplier asking for evidence of security controls.

Sometimes it’s a cyber insurance renewal that raises new questions.

Whatever the trigger, the conversation usually starts with the same realisation:

“We should probably look at this properly.”

The challenge for many organisations is knowing where to begin.

Cyber security can feel complex, and the landscape changes constantly.

That’s why many organisations start with frameworks that focus on practical, widely recognised security controls.

Schemes like Cyber Essentials help organisations establish a baseline — covering the areas that prevent the majority of common attacks.

It’s not about perfection.

It’s about moving from reactive security to proactive resilience.

When people think about cyber security, they often imagine complex technology.

But for most organisations, good security actually starts with a handful of fundamentals.

Ask most security professionals what makes the biggest difference, and the answers are surprisingly consistent.

Things like:

• Keeping systems patched and up to date
• Using multi-factor authentication
• Restricting administrative privileges
• Ensuring devices are securely configured
• Running effective malware protection

None of these are particularly exotic.

But together they significantly reduce the likelihood of the most common types of cyber attack.

This is exactly why the UK’s Cyber Essentials scheme focuses on these core controls.

It’s not about implementing everything at once.

It’s about establishing a clear baseline of security that protects organisations against the attacks most businesses actually face.

In cyber security, the fundamentals still matter more than anything else.

One of the biggest misconceptions in cyber security is this:

“Hackers only target large organisations.”

In reality, many attacks are far less selective.

A large proportion of cyber security attacks are automated and opportunistic. Attackers scan the internet looking for organisations with basic weaknesses — unpatched systems, weak passwords, or poorly secured remote access.

And very often, smaller organisations are easier targets.

Not because they are careless, but because they typically have:

• smaller IT teams
• fewer security resources
• less time to focus on cyber resilience

For attackers, that makes them attractive.

The encouraging news is that many of the attacks affecting SMEs exploit very common security gaps.

Which means relatively straightforward controls can dramatically reduce risk.

This is exactly why baseline frameworks like Cyber Essentials exist — to help organisations put the fundamental protections in place that prevent the majority of common attacks.

Cyber security doesn’t have to start with complexity.

Often it starts with getting the basics right.

We are very proud to announce that after a lot of hard work - and scrutiny from the team at IASME - we have achieved the first step in our journey to become an NCSC Assured Service Provider.

This is recognition that Evolve take their own cyber resilience very seriously:
- It provides our customers, stakeholders and supply chain with the reassurance that Evolve have both the technical measures and the quality processes in place to protect themselves
- And it shows that we align with global data protection and privacy regulations.

Most importantly, it aligns with our values of Integrity and Security and our mission to keep improving.

Our new brand launches today... https://helloevolve.co.uk

For several months we have been working on an internal business improvement initiative and the brand launch is external manifestation of that work - the tip of the iceberg.

The main thrust of the improvements is what we've called 'Becoming a Security First MSP'. While great customer service and integrity will always be fundamental to what we do, we are pushing cyber security to the forefront. That means imbedding it across the business - both in the services we provide to our customers and internally - in our people and processes.

So there will be lots more news coming up but in the meantime I thought you might like to know the rationale behind the logo...

So the 'E' is a list with a tick. This represents the nature of what we do and what is fundamental to good cyber security... checking that everything is being done correctly. And then checking that the checking is being done.

Behind the scenes that occupies a lot of our time - every day, every week, every month, every quarter...

It's not very exciting to explain to people but it is essential that it gets done. So our lovely mint green 'E' is a shortcut so that everyone - including our team - understands that this is at the core of what we do.
