Todays has been a mixed bag of support from installing printers, fixed Active Directory roaming profile problems and a lovely couple that sadly had been victims of a BT scam. You may, or may not, have heard of such scams but this is one I have come across many times. The general jist is this....
You get a call from BT (or another provider, but normally BT) telling you that your public IP has been compromised in some way and that there has been illegal activity coming from it, often they might spice this up with hacking activity, or illegal p**n. As people are embarrassed by this their guard is instantly down.
They will then ask to connect to you, once you accept they will have you install a RAT (Remote access trojan) which can be software like AnyDesk, TeamViewer etc. Once installed and you provide the ID they will have unattended access to your computer meaning they can connect whenever they like.
They will ask you to check your bank to see if there has been any suspicious activity and at this stage often saying you are ok. They will insist that you leave your machine on whilst it 'resets' and will often tell you to leave your phone cued up for about 20 minutes.
So why do they do this..... leaving your machine on means they can blank the screen and access your bank (that you have logged onto on that browser session) to complete a transfer, the reason for your phone is being left off the hook, well if you bank suspects fraud they will often call you, the phone being off the hook means you have occupied the line stopping any call to you to alert you. This lovely couple had money stolen from their bank, once attending multiple installs of AnyDesk was found including installed on mobile phones that shared the same Gmail account as you can push app installs. All devices sanitised and a full forensic check showed what they have done and when.
if you ever get a call from BT, Amazon, Your bank, Paypal etc ask for a ticket ref or case ref. Hang up and call them back on their official number, if its genuine they can pick up where you left off. Never allow anyone remote access to any device unless you are 1000% sure who they are. If in any doubt that you have been scammed turn off the computer and disconnect it from the internet and seek advice.
I only wish BT was that helpful to remote to your computer... but they are not.
