Having a small business where advertising my services only on Facebook is no easy task. Therefore, I have decided to offer free labour to the first 10 people who ask to have their computer problems fixed.
The most common problem I have gotten in the past are a computer running slowly. This is easily fixed and, if you have a conventional disk in your computer, replacing it with a solid state disk is the best solution. I expect one of the biggest problems over the next year or so to be switching from Windows 10 to Windows 11. As mentioned before, this is not a difficult task, even if you do not have a compliant computer.
So, please message me if you would like to take advantage of free labour. I can come to you or you can drop off your computer to my office.

OK, the time has come to start the business again. Many of you will have seen various posts on the change from Windows 10 to Windows 11. If you are unsure of what to do (buy a new computer? That's crazy) considering that Windows 11 sort of requires TPM security, please contact me. I say "sort of" because it can be circumvented rather easily. Some people may say that you shouldn't install Windows 11 if the computer does not meet the strict security requirements. Although these requirements are desirable, they are not really necessary, especially if you cannot afford a new computer. So, if anyone in the Worthing, Shoreham, or Goring area needs help resolving issues, please get in touch.

Please be aware that I have moved from Cornwall to West Sussex. Currently, I am not available for working on people's problems with computers due to work required on my house and garden, but I will hopefully start up again in a couple of months in West Sussex.

Speaking of storage as in my last post, Windows 10 has a new feature called Storage Sense. It appears that it's not on by default so you need to turn it on and configure it. Go to Start, Settings, System, Storage. Right at the top of the page, turn Storage Sense on by clicking the Off/On button, then click on the link below it entitled, Configure Storage Sense or run it now. Change the Run Storage Sense drop-down to Every week; under Temporary files, ensure that the box is ticked then change the first drop-down to 1 day and the second drop-down to Never (if you value the contents of the Downloads folder), and that's it!

For those of you who are unaware of the huge number of temporary files that Windows create that are not needed any longer and definitely contribute to the reasons why many computers slow down over time, Windows 10 makes it quite easy to delete them. Go to Settings, System, Storage and you will note that there is usually a category of files called Temporary files. Click on that and it will calculate the size of all of the temp files that Windows creates. Tick all of the boxes then click on Remove files. Your computer may not speed up after reboot but if you then defragment the hard disk (do a search for dfrgui.exe), the computer will be faster to varying degrees. If you have an SSD installed (solid state drive), your computer will not slow down due to all these files but it's a good idea to clear them off the SSD.

I just converted my laptop and desktop from SATA hard disks to a Samsung SSD. Don't know why I haven't done it before this as it now boots up in less than 15 seconds! I got an enclosure for the former hard disk and now use it as an external disk. It's so easy now to clone an original hard disk to an SSD, then just swap disks and it works as before, only much faster. I bought a couple of 256 GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD's from ebay for about £40 each - fantastic!

If you haven't converted to Windows 10 yet, be aware that sellers on ebay have legitimate licenses for fresh installs available for less than £5. I bought one recently for £2 and installed Windows 10 with no problems.

Just so everyone is aware, legitimate copies of MS Office 2019 are available on ebay for less than £10. I have bought half a dozen with no installation problems. My only advice, if you decide to purchase one, would be to install it within a few days.

I recently read that you can still upgrade a Windows 7 or 8 computer to Windows 10 for free. Being skeptical, as Microsoft supposedly stopped giving away Windows 10 for free, I decided to try it and it worked. All you need is the product key for the computer you want to change and a copy of Windows 10 (get one using the Media Creation Tool) and input it during the Windows 10 install process. You can either upgrade to preserve your programs and data or you can do a clean install. So, any of you who missed the automatic upgrade can still get Windows 10 but I don't know how long this will last.

Have you ever wanted to edit a PDF document without buying expensive PDF editor software? If you have Microsoft Office 2013 or later, MS Word will now transcribe a PDF document into a Word document and make it editable. There are certain exceptions, such as scanned PDF documents (to make editable, be sure to enable OCR) but, on the whole, it works very well. Just open Word and select File => Open, select the PDF doc and follow the prompts.

I have now converted all my computers to Windows 10; dare I say it's the best operating system Microsoft has produced to date! It's well worth doing, certainly before the end of July when the free upgrade expires.
