Specifying paper for design is becoming increasingly disorientating as paper mills continue to close wiping millions of tons of product off the European market. Here is a photographer's record of the vast Scheufelen factory which closed in 2019.

This abandoned paper mill is a lost place unlike any other I’ve visited before. The factory was abandoned just a few years ago during the pandemic.

Graphis NY have announced the winners of the 2024 Advertising Awards and the promotional items I created for the Library of Mistakes have received a Gold Award! I’m absolutely delighted.

Well, there’s always room for shelf improvement 😀

I’m very pleased for the Library of Mistakes who went with some radical ideas!

And I have more ideas up my sleeve…

Another picture from my dance series from 1987, Pantomime, combining the realistic with the surreal. Airbrush on board, acrylics, watercolour and chalk, 65x65cm.

In this image, the chalk lines were actually created with a large piece of chalk over the masked illustration.

DANCE: Breakdance

A blast from the past. This is an illustration from a series of 7 pieces on the subject of dance I created in 1987 while a student of communication design.

In these studies I wanted to combine the realistic with the surreal and tried the medium of airbrush for the first time, using watercolours and acrylic paints on board.

The Landesbausparkasse (LBS), a German bank, had approached my design professor with the idea of a calendar competition for his students. Open subject, winner’s work turned into a calendar, all works exhibited. I learned a lot but my results were way too variable.

The subjects of my pictures were friends who struck poses for photographic reference images.

In this image, the central swoosh of blue gloss paint was actually made with a single stroke of a large brush over the masked artwork. I practised a number of times before committing.

Creating artwork in the pre-digital age was a sometimes nerve-wracking commitment to single actions that could destroy the artwork.

Haas Design is delighted to have helped put together a suite of primary and secondary school handbooks and leaflets for Christian Aid UK as part of their Global Neighbours programme.

Global Neighbours is an accreditation scheme which recognises and celebrates all that schools are doing to empower their young people to become active global citizens.

We are now developing the Welsh versions as well.

A circle of peacebuilding collaborators which forms part of a new infographic design on Climate Change and Conflict for the charity Conciliation Resources.

Conciliation Resources is an international organisation committed to stopping violent conflict and creating more peaceful societies.

Haas Design has provided a series of infographics over the years that give concise and approachable outlines of CR’s areas of interest and activity such as Talking to Armed Groups, FARC, Women in Peace Processes, Inclusion in Peace Processes, Building Blocks for Peace, and others.

Online, these graphics have an interactive Thinglink interface revealing further info and context.

Last Friday was the prize giving at the Scottish Portrait Awards in Edinburgh and my portrait ‘Jiner’ received a 'Highly Commended’ award. Thanks to the SPA and my subject, John Young.

The exhibition is open now until Saturday 30 September 2023 and I highly recommend going. The 30 pieces in the fine art section were selected for their variety as well as for their quality, so it is very interesting. Then there are the photographic portraits as well, which are part of the same exhibition.

The exhibition space is at the Scottish Arts Trust in 24 Rutland Square in Edinburgh.
