Not all vehicles are salvaged equally!
When vehicles are sold for salvage, they fall into specific categories. Hereโs a quick run down in order of volume:
๏ธโฃ Cat N (Non-Structural Damage) โ repairable write-offs, usually involving bodywork damage.
๏ธโฃ Cat S (Structural Damage) โ repairable damage affecting the structural integrity of the vehicle.
๏ธโฃ Unrecorded (U) โ not categorised for the MIAFTR register, this category includes structural and non-structural damage, as well as vehicles deemed uneconomical for repair by dealers, fleets and private sellers - typically the more problematic category for buyers relying on a limited description and inspection report
๏ธโฃCat B (Breaker) โ too damaged to return to the road, but may be purchased and dismantled for valuable parts by an Approved Treatment Facility (ATF).
๏ธโฃ Cat X (Stolen/Recovered) โ typically involving minimal damage, this category is typically considered lower risk by salvage buyers, offering greater speed and ease of repair
