💙 “Mummy, why are we not welcome?”

Yesterday, we tried to book a table at a local restaurant and explained that we have two children with food allergies.

The response was polite, but there were no questions, no explanation and no attempt to understand whether our allergies could be accommodated.

Later, while talking to my husband, I said, “I guess we are not welcome there.”

I did not realise our son had overheard.

He looked at me and asked,
“Mummy, why are we not welcome?”

💙 That question has stayed with us.

We completely understand that not every restaurant can safely cater for every allergy. Safety must always come first.

🤝 But communication matters. A simple explanation can make all the difference.

🌿 Thankfully, this has not been our experience everywhere. Here in Abruzzo, restaurant after restaurant has welcomed us, asked questions, taken allergies seriously and made us feel genuinely included.

❤️ That is what hospitality is all about.

No child with a food allergy should ever have to wonder whether they are welcome.

☀️ Summer reminder: are your EpiPens stored safely in the heat?

As temperatures rise, it is worth checking how EpiPens are being stored.

Extreme heat can affect medication performance, so keeping EpiPens within the recommended temperature range is an important part of making sure they remain effective when needed most.

A few key reminders for summer storage:

🪭 Keep EpiPens between 15°C and 25°C where possible
🪭 Avoid storing them in the fridge or freezer
🪭 Try not to let them go above 30°C

Here are a few practical ways to help keep them temperature controlled during warmer weather 👇

✋Do not leave them in the car Cars can heat up very quickly in summer, especially in direct sunlight. Avoid leaving EpiPens in the car for prolonged periods.

✋Keep them out of direct sunlight Store them in a bag, cupboard, or shaded place to reduce heat and UV exposure.

✋Consider using a cooling pouch Cooling pouches can be especially helpful for holidays, day trips, and time outdoors, helping to keep EpiPens within a safer temperature range.

🚨 3 weeks to go 🚨

On 14 July, Allergy Companions will be bringing people together in Warwick to talk about something that matters hugely to all of us: allergen management.

This conference is about improving safety, raising standards and having honest conversations about what food businesses need to do to better protect allergic consumers. 💙

For those living with food allergies, or supporting someone who does, these conversations matter. The more seriously allergen management is taken across the food and hospitality industry, the safer and more inclusive eating out becomes.

There will be expert speakers, interactive workshops, great food from The English Indian and, most importantly, a room full of people who care about getting this right.

⚠️ A reminder to always check allergens and ingredients when buying food, even if it’s a product you’ve bought before.

Wall’s Ice Cream UK Twister now contains milk (previously only a “may contain) so you should avoid if you have a milk allergy.

The packaging clearly states the allergen change but it might not be obvious when buying individual ice creams.

Stay safe and always check the label 💚

We did it!!!

Yesterday, we made the first positive step forward in our allergy journey—our son successfully passed his “hazelnut challenge” 🙌⭐️

It honestly felt like the longest 3.5 hours of our lives… lots of waiting, worrying, and hoping for no reaction 😩🙏

Our boy was an absolute superstar. Not a single complaint, not one “what time can we go home?”, not a single “I don’t want to do this.” He just calmly went through the process, with Mummy and Daddy right by his side.

We couldn’t be more proud of him ❤️

Yes, we still have walnut and pecan to think about, but after 7 years without real progress, this feels like the best result for us right now.

A really important step forward for allergy safety in schools 👏

The announcement that allergy awareness training will become compulsory in schools in England is very welcome news.

Food allergies are now a reality in many classrooms. For too long, many families have had to rely on individual teachers or schools going above and beyond to understand the seriousness of allergic reactions and how to respond if something goes wrong.

Training will not solve everything, but it gives staff the confidence to recognise the signs of an allergic reaction and act quickly when it matters most.

It is also a reminder that meaningful change in this space too often follows tragedy 💔 We can only hope that steps like this encourage more proactive action in the future.

Allergy safety should never depend solely on parents advocating for their children. It should be built into the systems designed to care for them.

Our thoughts are with Benedict Blythe’s mum, Helen Blythe, and her family, who have campaigned tirelessly for these changes.

This is what great hospitality looks like ✨

We are planning a special trip to Venice as a family 🛶, and food is one of the things that really matters to us — especially when allergies are involved 🍽️.

We reached out to a hotel with a few questions, and this was their response.
Simple. Positive. Reassuring. 💬

No complicated language, no copy-and-paste disclaimers — just a willingness to help and make guests feel welcome 🤝.

And honestly, that makes all the difference when deciding where to stay 🏨.

We’ve had very different experiences in the past — from limited breakfast options 🥐 to standard “can’t guarantee” replies from staff who clearly weren’t trained to handle allergy questions.

Guests don’t expect perfection — they want to feel heard ❤️.

Sometimes great hospitality starts with a simple email 📧.

“May contain nuts.” 
For many people, that doesn’t just mean be careful — it means… DON’T EAT HERE AT ALL ⚠️

More menus now proudly offer vegan, GF and dairy-free options 🌱 
But when everything is also labelled may contain nuts, it sends a very clear message to those with nut allergies: you are not truly safe here.

Sometimes a blanket warning is absolutely the right choice ✅ 
But it should be based on real, unavoidable risk — not just legal protection.

Food should be about inclusion, trust and enjoyment 🍽️ 
Not fear.
