The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) is a national facility for looking after and distributing data concerning the marine environment. We deal with biological, chemical, physical and geophysical data. Our databases contain measurements of nearly 22,000 different variables. Many of our staff have direct experience of marine data collection and analysis. They work alongside information technology specialists to ensure that data are documented and stored for current and future use.

πŸ“ŠπŸŒ Building data skills is essential for tackling today's environmental challenges.

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Environmental Data Service (EDS) has been supporting researchers across the environmental science community to develop the data management, analysis and open science skills needed to make the most of environmental data.

From research data management and FAIR principles to practical training opportunities, strengthening data capability helps ensure environmental research is more accessible, reproducible and impactful.

Last week, the NERC Environmental Data Service (EDS) Early Careers Network group met at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Liverpool to share knowledge and experiences across their specialist fields.

BODC was well represented, with presentations covering the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO https://hubs.la/Q04qRCfh0) , data submissions, and autonomous platform data management. The event provided a valuable opportunity to showcase our work, exchange ideas, and learn from colleagues across the environmental data community.

It was a fantastic meeting, offering plenty of opportunities to network, build new connections, and engage with fellow early career professionals.

As part of the Digital Research infrastructure (DRI) webinar series, the Natural Environment Research Council Environmental Data Service (EDS) is presenting an introduction to the NERC EDS on July 8th 14:00-15:00.

Join to learn about the NERC EDS, a trusted UK facility providing data stewardship to ensure environmental data of long-term value are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR).

This webinar will showcase key services that support data management, standardisation, and discovery, including:

- The Data Stewardship Wizard, an open-source platform designed by stakeholder requirements, supporting collaborative data management planning
- The NERC Vocabulary Server (NVS), a plethora of standardised vocabularies to enhance data interoperability and reuse
- The NERC Data Catalogue, an integrated search across EDS data holdings providing access to data

The session will also highlight NERC EDS work on making environmental data AI-ready, featuring insights from the High5 for AI and FRAME-FM projects.

This free webinar is open to all. Please reserve a ticket to receive joining information. The session will be recorded.

Through the NERC Environmental Data Service (EDS) High5 for AI project, we’ve boosted access to key environmental datasets and made them more AI-ready. Highlights include:
🌊 Our CTD profile data now available via ERDDAP
πŸͺ¨ National Geographic Data Centre (NGDC) Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for offshore samples, mapping, and boreholes
🌍 Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA) promoting European Space Agency (ESA) soil moisture data with improved discovery via SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC)
🌱 Environmental Information Data Centre (EIDC) enabling Machine-Learning-ready landcover data workflows
We’ve also adopted the Croissant metadata standard, helping datasets integrate seamlessly into AI and machine learning pipelines - saving time and improving usability.
This work standardises access across data centres, making it easier to combine datasets, run analyses, and answer big environmental questions.
