The Black Report research conducted by 10X10 and Google, showed that in a case study of start-ups in the UK 88% of the founders self-funded part of their ventures. On average, founders self-funded £13,930 which suggests that a mix of other financing alternatives still comprise the bulk. What’s also interesting is that self-finance among these black founders was not synonymous with ‘family and friends round.’ Only 22% of Black founders relied on friends and family for early financial support - precisely 25% of the amount who self-funded their venture.

At unLevel we understand that it saves founders having to pitch for external investors, where a lot of time is consumed and rejection is faced. The unLevel platform looks to make funding a much simpler process.

The Good Immigrant is an anthology of twenty-one essays edited by Nikesh Shukla after a crowdfunding campaign. Written by British authors who identify as; Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, the essays concern race, immigration, identity, exploring the experience of immigrants and ethnic minority life in the United Kingdom from their perspective. Contributors include actor/musician Riz Ahmed, journalist Reni Eddo-Lodge, comedian Nish Kumar and playwright Vinay Patel. This is not only a great read that we would recommend, but also a great example of what crowd-funding can achieve.

The American Express annual state of women owned businesses report focuses on women-owned businesses. These are defined as US businesses that are at least 51% owned, operated and controlled by one or more Females. Between 2014 and 2019, the number of women-owned businesses climbed 21% to a total of nearly 13 million (12,943,400). Over the past five years, the annual growth rate in the number of women-owned firms has been more than double that of all businesses at 9%.

At unLevel we believe the potential of women entrepreneurs for spurring economic growth has not been fully realized and we hope to assist this by creating a platform that will allow Female founders to share their businesses with the community.

For Black and Latinx founded companies in the US, 39% have a Female founder. Although in 2019, the percentage of Venture Capital that went to Female only founded companies in the US was 4% and to male-female co-led companies it was 9%. These statistics show that Black and Latinx females are being under funded in comparison to male founders. Historically, funding for Black and Multi-Ethnic founders has paled in comparison to that for founders from majority groups. Black Female entrepreneurs experienced the poorest outcomes. A total of 10 Female entrepreneurs of Black appearance received venture capital investment (0.02% of the total amount invested) across the 10-year period between 2009 - 2019. At unLevel it is widely acknowledged that the coronavirus pandemic presents an opportunity to build back better, join the community at and help us on our mission.
