A new global agreement - the Glasgow Climate Pact - was reached at the COP26 summit.
COP26 has brought together world leaders, activists, and delegates from all over the world to discuss solutions and plans to manage the climate crisis.

With a different topic discussed each day by decision-makers and frontline voices, it was hoped by many that COP26 would reinvigorate agreements from the past, such as the Paris Climate Agreement, and establish new ones to help mitigate the damaging effects of climate change around the world.

The agreement - although not legally binding - will set the global agenda on climate change for the next decade.

Renewable power generation grew at the fastest rate for two decades in 2020 according to a new report from the International Energy Agency. 278 gigawatts of capacity was added last year, a 45% jump and the largest year-over-year increase since 1999. The growth was even more impressive given that it occurred in the midst of pandemic-induced supply chain challenges and construction delays.

The exceptional level of renewable energy capacity additions is expected to be maintained with 270 GW forecast to become operational in 2021 while 280 GW is predicted for 2022. The IEA attibutes the boom to policy decisions in the United States, China and Vietnam with China alone responsible for 80 percent of global annual installations between 2019 and 2020.

Then look no further than World Vegan Day!

World Vegan Day first occurred on November 1st, 1994 as a way of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the UK Vegan Society and indeed the term “Vegan”.

The World Vegan Day helps us understand the reason behind people who are vegan and helps connect them to the world, opening up the possibility for more people to broaden their perspectives. Not only contributing by being vegan but also thinking about the environment in their daily lives or simply, eating less meat than before!

We wanted to celebrate this day by spreading awareness about the environmental impacts of animal agriculture, which you can see in the infographic here.

According to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, if cows were a country (“Republic of cattle” 🐮), they would rank 3rd in GHG emissions, after China and the U.S. 💨

While a meat eater has the highest footprint at 3.3 tons of GHG, a vegan diet has the lowest at 1.5 tons CO2e. The footprint of a vegetarian diet is about half that of a meat eater's one 👣

During the process of photosynthesis, trees pollutants like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe.

It's incredible, isn’t? Then let’s save our trees!

They have a vital role in the future of our planet, which is why it’s so crucial that we protect them.
We can do this by contributing to reforestation projects, combating , sourcing our food, paper, and wooden goods , and working to reduce our emissions.

What are the environmental impacts of food and agriculture? 

The infographic here shows a summary of some of the main global impacts:
- Food accounts for over a quarter (26%) of global greenhouse gas emissions;
- Half of the world’s habitable (ice-and desert-free) land is used for agriculture;
- 70% of global freshwater withdrawals are used for agriculture;
- 78% of global ocean and freshwater eutrophication (the pollution of waterways with nutrient-rich pollutants) is caused by agriculture;
- 94% of mammal biomass (excluding humans) is livestock.

Food, therefore, lies at the heart of trying to tackle climate change, reducing water stress, pollution, restoring lands back to forests or grasslands, and protecting the world’s wildlife.
