Then got kicked off after freezing on stage in Vegas.

That’s Roger Wade.

Fired three times before 22.
Built one of the UK’s original streetwear brands.
Then went on to create BOXPARK, the world’s first pop-up mall.

This episode is a slight shift from our usual tech conversations, but it might be one of the most important we’ve done. Because behind all the AI, platforms, and integrations we talk about, this is what actually drives success:

👉 Building something people genuinely want
👉 Scaling it in the real world
👉 Knowing when (and how) to exit

A few things that stuck with me:

• Physical retail converts at ~10% vs 1–2% online
• “Profit is sanity, turnover is vanity”
• Raising money doesn’t mean you’ve made it
• If you’re not special to your customer, you don’t exist

What’s interesting is that he doesn’t see himself as a tech founder. But he built tech before most people realised they needed it.

And that’s the point.

Tech is the enabler, not the strategy.

Most operators still treat connectivity like WiFi. Install it, hope it works, and only think about it when it breaks.

The reality is it is now one of the most important lines in your P&L.

Chris spoke with Liz McKinnon from Sky Business and Jatin Chandwani from Yum! Brands about why connectivity is no longer background infrastructure. It is the backbone of your operation.

When up to 60% of revenue comes through kiosks, apps, and delivery, any drop in connectivity means lost sales.

We are moving from reacting to yesterday’s data to making real time decisions during the shift, powered by AI. Operators getting this right are already seeing 10 to 20% improvements.

But none of this works without clean data and proper consent. GDPR is not a blocker. It is the foundation for trust.

Guest WiFi is also hugely underused. It is not just a nice extra, it is a real growth channel.

The shift is simple. Stop thinking in point solutions and start thinking in connected ecosystems.
