Amongst the top 100 UK law firms, the most common CTA was a “Contact us” button (95%) to encourage an initial conversation with potential clients. The second most popular CTA was “Read more” (72%) which interestingly shows that law firms are keen to show off their knowledge about their particular expertise to attract new clients.

A call to action (CTA) is a term used for designs, prompting or encouraging you to take specific action on a website. Common CTAs include:

• ‘Book now’
• ‘Find out more’
• ‘Subscribe here’

Without calls to action, your customers may struggle on the route to booking an appointment or seeking help from your website.

We had a small panel of testers rate the overall appearance of the top 100 UK law firms' websites for our Shape of the Industry Report.

To achieve a 'great' score from the panel, each website needed to receive 8.0 or higher out of ten. Scores were given based on four measures: design, creativity, usability and content.

We found that fewer than one in ten websites had a creative and modern website that tested well.

Trust signals are important pieces of evidence to make your client or customer feel secure with their decision to choose your product or services.

Law firms are becoming increasingly transparent with client reviews and testimonals - for example using platforms such as Trustpilot to show credibility.

Core Web Vitals are made up of three metrics that account for your experience loading a webpage.

Having a page that loads quickly is important, and research shows that if your page load time rises from one to six seconds, your bounce rate will increase by 106%.

Whilst looking at Core Web Vitals on mobile for the top 100 UK law firms, we found only one to have an excellent page speed insight score on mobile.

Louis Suggett, Commercial Director, shares with us the headlines from our ‘Shape of the Industry: UK Law Firms 2022 Website Performance Report’.

Looking at the top 100 UK law firms’ websites, we found:
•A majority of sites had room for improvement with their SEO.
•Websites had an average of 225 broken links per site.
•More than half didn’t pass Core Web vitals for desktop and mobile.
•More than half didn’t pass a basic security test!
