WEB3 Domain Providers

ENS - Ethereum Name Service
The ENS is the new domain naming system built on top of the Ethereum network that enables users to create memorable and distinctive addresses or usernames. It utilizes Ethereum’s smart contracts to provide supplementary services to the conventional DNS and manage domain name registration and resolution. ENS allows users to create a single username for all their wallet addresses, decentralized apps, and websites in a distributed ecosystem.

HNS - Handshake
Handshake is a decentralized, permissionless naming protocol where every peer is validating and in charge of managing the root DNS naming zone with the goal of creating an alternative to existing Certificate Authorities and naming systems.
By running Handshake, one can participate in a decentralized open naming platform secured by a decentralized peer-to-peer network.

UD - Unstoppable Domains
NFT Domains are new web extensions (like .com or .info) launched as smart contracts on public blockchains. For example, our domains are an ERC 721 on the Ethereum blockchain and Polygon Network.
You own the private keys of the wallet storing your domain and nobody will be able to take your domain/website/content/settings away from you.

NFT.com
A community-driven platform for enabling creators to interact directly with their fans by issuing, trading, and displaying NFTs through a Web3 social network.
NFT Profiles serve as the base of the NFT Protocol’s social network. They can be deployed to represent a gallery of owned NFTs or a specific NFT collection. Each NFT Profile represents a unique profile name.

WEB2 VS WEB3 - VOL I

Web2 refers to the version of the internet most of us know today. An internet dominated by companies that provide services in exchange for your personal data. Web3, in the context of Ethereum, refers to decentralized apps that run on the blockchain. These are apps that allow anyone to participate without monetising their personal data.

WEB3 BENEFITS
Many Web3 developers have chosen to build dapps because of Ethereum’s inherent decentralization:
- Anyone who is on the network has permission to use the service – or in other words, permission isn’t required.
- No one can block you or deny you access to the service.
- Payments are built in via the native token, ether (ETH).
- Ethereum is turing-complete, meaning you can pretty much program anything.

PRACTICAL COMPARISONS
Web2 Twitter can censor any account or tweet
Web3 Tweets would be uncensorable because control is decentralized
Web2 Payment service may decide to not allow payments for certain types of work
Web3 Payment apps require no personal data and can’t prevent payments
Web2 Servers for gig-economy apps could go down and affect worker income
Web3 Servers can’t go down – they use Ethereum, a decentralized network of 1000s of computers as their backend

This doesn’t mean that all services need to be turned into a dapp. These examples are illustrative of the main differences between web2 and web3 services.

Ticketmaster will now let event organizers issue NFTs (non-fungible tokens) tied to tickets on Flow, a blockchain operated by a16z-backed Dapper Labs. The Live Nation subsidiary said that event organizers can make these NFTs available before, during or after the event and even enable special experiences like loyalty rewards or celebrity meet-and-greets — or simply offer memorabilia in an NFT format.

“Event organizers who choose to offer fans an NFT with their ticket have a real opportunity to make this new technology relevant and relatable at scale. This is why we are partnering with Flow, because their blockchain is custom-built for fan engagement and frictionless consumer experiences,” Brendan Lynch, Ticketmaster EVP of Enterprise & Revenue, said in a statement.

Why Web3 domains? VOL II

Web3, also known as the “read-write-trust web” and the “decentralized web,” aspires to take control of the web away from monopolistic tech giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft and give the control of users’ data and content back to the users. So, how will Web3 work and how is Web3 DNS different from traditional domains?

A traditional blockchain currently has limitations that make it difficult to use and have reduced its widespread acceptance. An example of a standard wallet address is 0x483add48edbd9f83fb5db0289c7ed48c83f56992. Any typical individual would be scared by this, which would prevent adoption. This same problem occured with IP addresses that the internet had to overcome to gain popularity.

Blockchain organizations need a name service to establish digital identities across public addresses. Furthermore, consumers will find it much easier to interact with a named address than a stream of arbitrary alphabets and digits. For instance, a decentralized Web3 name service like the RIF name service is a DNS-inspired hierarchical namespace. RNS’s design aims to provide a naming convention that can be used to refer to resources.

Why Web3 Domains?

Web3 domains differ from standard domain name system (DNS) addresses such as Instagram.com or Google.com. A DNS is similar to a telephone directory, only it indexes public websites and their accompanying internet protocol (IP) addresses to enable the directory.

Thenewslack.crypto is the result of a 42-character hex string. However, in the case of Web3 blockchain domain name systems, one can simply remember a shorter phrase. Web3 refers to the next generation of the web’s legal, technical and monetary architecture, including smart contracts, blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Web3 projects fit into various categories like digital services, decentralized finance (DeFi), and collectibles.

A decentralized crypto domain is a human-readable address that serves as a stand-in for your crypto wallet, rather than offering a human-readable collection of characters as an IP address. These Web3 domain names are nonfungible tokens (NFTs) or digital certificates of validity that may be traded on platforms like Solana’s Solsea or OpenSea. Moreover, Web3 domains have Web3 domain extensions like .crypto, .dao and .eth.

The attractiveness of a Web3 domain name, which symbolizes a blockchain address, is straightforward. For instance, “Send the salary to bob.eth,” rather than reciting some impossible-to-remember 42-character crypto wallet address, is considerably easier for the sender to remember and do.

29/07/2022

The ENS Name Wrapper allows turning ENS names into ERC1155 NFTs.
Meaning that a wrapped eth. parent domain will be able to set permissions or rights to its subdomains.
ENS wants to apply this not only to eth. domains but to the entire internet domain system.

For example, a user can create the domain “example.eth” and allow the creation of the subdomain “one.example.eth” but disallow any further creation of subdomains.

This set of permissions is called fuses and allows granting more rights for a subdomain such as:
- Create more subdomains
- Ability to transfer a subdomain
- Inability for the ownership to be revoked

More fuses can be created and existing ones can also be enabled or disabled permanently.
This brings more clarity and decentralization to ENS trading since anyone can see what rights are attached to a specific eth. subdomain and price it accordingly.

Web2 vs Web3 (ETHEREUM example)

Web2 refers to the version of the internet most of us know today. An internet dominated by companies that provide services in exchange for your personal data. Web3, in the context of Ethereum, refers to decentralized apps that run on the blockchain. These are apps that allow anyone to participate without monetising their personal data.

Web3 has some limitations right now:
- Scalability – transactions are slower on web3 because they’re decentralized. Changes to state, like a payment, need to be processed by a miner and propagated throughout the network.
- UX – interacting with web3 applications can require extra steps, software, and education. This can be a hurdle to adoption.
- Accessibility – the lack of integration in modern web browsers makes web3 less accessible to most users.
- Cost – most successful dapps put very small portions of their code on the blockchain as it’s expensive.

Note that these are general patterns that may not hold true in every network. Furthermore, in reality the degree to which a network is centralized/decentralized lies on a spectrum; no network is entirely centralized or entirely decentralized.

AMAZON.ETH domain gets a $1,000,000 offer from a fresh new wallet. ENS domains (Ethereum Naming Services) have been gaining a lot of traffic and volume inn the recent months.

People are guessing this bid might come from themselves considering the high bid and it coming from a fresh new wallet.

DECENTRALISATION IN THE WEB

The early 2000s marked an inflection point in the growth of the web and a key period of its development, as technology companies that survived the dot-com crash evolved to deliver value to customers in new ways amidst heightened skepticism around the web:

- Desktop browsers like Netscape became commoditized and paved the way for native web services for discovering content like search engines.
- Network effects that were initially driven by hyperlinks in web directories like Yahoo! were hyperscaled by platforms that enabled user engagement and harnessed collective intelligence like review sites.
- The massive volume of data generated by Internet activity and the growing realization of its competitive value forced companies to become experts at database management.

O’Reilly Media coined the concept of Web 2.0 in an attempt to capture such shifts in design principles, which were transformative to the usability and interactiveness of the web and continue to be core building blocks for Internet companies nearly two decades later.

However, in the midst of the web 2.0 transformation, the web fell out of touch with one of its initial core tenets — decentralization.

Decentralization: No permission is needed from a central authority to post anything on the web, there is no central controlling node, and so no single point of failure … and no “kill switch”!
