How do you represent a whole creature in a book cover?
That’s the challenge of Monster Tomes: to epitomise some of the most iconic creatures in fantasy in tome form, and the Red Dragon was the first one we decided to tackle. It needed to capture the greed, the power, the arrogance, even the majesty of the creature.
Red was obviously the go-to colour, a deep crimson to be precise. That part was easy
But the adornments were more challenging. A dragon’s hoard is excessive by nature, but too many would make it feel a bit tacky and debase the subject.
The final version is actually a combination of elements from several of these explorations.
Can you spot which ones made the cut?
