Today marks the first of many deaf awareness sessions delivered to student midwives at UWE Bristol. It was a large group and given that it was first thing on a Friday morning, they were really engaged and enthusiastic. They aced the first lip-reading challenge which was no mean feat-so I made sure that the second challenge I gave them was much harder, to really put them to the test. It certainly gave them a better understanding of what deaf and hard of hearing people encounter on a daily basis and how exhausting it must be.

CfD also signposted the student midwives to a recent investigative series from Rare TV and Flashing Lights Media for Lumo TV, called 'Open Your Eyes', which talks about the hidden communication and cultural failures affecting deaf mothers at their most vulnerable.

CfD aims to improve the experiences of deaf and hard of hearing expectant parents. The hope is that the midwives that undergo this training will work towards improving access and awareness to ensure better support and services for deaf and hard of hearing people throughout their pregnancy journey.
