Have another desktop install today. One that we built for an accountant in Chiswick.

Microsoft's decision to stop older technology from upgrading to Windows 11 means that this year, we have been busy building new desktops to replace some of the ones out there.

We actually started this project about 18 months ago because we identified that some of our customers had to upgrade 8 computers.

We felt it would be easier on their budget if we did it over a period of time.

So today, I am installing in Chiswick and back to the same client on Thursday with another new install

Had a busy day yesterday.

First, I had to pick up some computers to recover the data from them as they were no longer in use. When I got to the address they were all loosely boxed but that customer had not disconnected the monitor, keyboard or mice and I had to unplug them all before I could load them into the car. I have now recovered the data from the first desktop and that hard drive will now be securely wiped and recycled.

Then I went onto one of our accountant customers who had ordered a new refurbished corporate laptop for his staff to work from home on.

Whilst I was there, a recent problem that I have been struggling with rose its ugly head but because I was on site I caught the reason it was happening and after maybe 4 weeks finally I put that issue to bed.

Back home I got a call from a lettings agent who needs to upgrade his computer. It will be another refurb. They had 3 last year and are really happy with them. They replaced some really old worn-out machines.

It is a bit of a sad time for me at the moment. Over the years, we have built some really good sturdy desktops for home and business users. Some were built as long ago as 2011 and are still going great.

I got an email from a previous build client yesterday where we built her a desktop in 2014. She tells me it is still running wonderfully but will now not upgrade to Windows 11. I looked back on the original request from her and she said she wanted it future-proofed. Well, we did our best to future-proof it for her but did not consider at the time that Microsoft might kill off older machines.

I understand their reason for doing so but it has a huge cost implication on my clients. One client has 6 machines to change and another has 5.

Whilst this is great for our business it still leaves me with a tinge of sadness.

So having taken a small step into semi retirement, well just a toe poke in I take a few days on the Rhine doing the Christmas markets.

At London Heathrow I spy a customer of mine.

At our boarding gate he’s there again
Next he’s only on the bloody plane.
We arrive Germany and he gets on my coach!

Oh no he’s only on our bloody boat.

Fortunately he and his wife are lovely people
