"We're seeing attackers exploiting vulnerabilities way before there's a patch and more often than not before anyone's aware of it."

At The Big Fat Security Update of the Year at Infosecurity Europe 2026, Stuart McKenzie, Managing Director EMEA at Mandiant Consulting, Google Cloud, shared lessons learned from Mandiant's work on the front lines of incident response, observations on how threat actors have been leveraging AI, and practical guidance to help organisations strengthen their security posture.

McKenzie also warned:

"We're seeing the attackers no longer using static tools or static binaries. They're using LLMs to send commands or asking it for changing of commands or changing of code on the fly. So it's much harder for us to have static IOCs to be able to identify."

"We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to redefine the security space… whatever it is we've got going up until this point is clearly intractable."

In his session at , Juan Andrés Guerrero-Saade of Sentinel One shared a detailed roadmap of milestones AI applications will have to hit to make meaningful impact in the security space in the next few years.

Among the key points he made:

"If we don't articulate what we actually need from AI in order to do security well, the frontier labs are just going to insist on what's convenient for them to sell."

"What we need isn't really to define new product categories. That's kind of how the old thing got us here, but I think we need to actually discuss these things as unsolved computing problems."

"We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually redefine computing into something that's defensible. The tech is real. The foundational problems that we need to solve are actually more tractable than ever."

At this year’s Infosecurity Europe, the discussions around addressed its dual-use reality: serving as a powerful defense tool while simultaneously being leveraged as a sophisticated weapon.

Ransomware may grab the headlines, but Business Email Compromise (BEC) is costing organisations far more.

The FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center reported that US businesses lost $3bn to BEC attacks in 2025, dwarfing the reported financial losses linked to ransomware.

Unlike ransomware, BEC attacks are designed to stay under the radar. Victims often don't realise they've been targeted until fraudulent payments have already been made, making recovery incredibly difficult.

That was one of the defining questions posed by former CIA Chief of Disguise Jonna Mendez, whose keynote explored the relationship between risk, trust and deception in an increasingly complex world.

It was one of more than 340 sessions across this year's programme, with insights from leaders including Shlomo Kramer, who explored how AI is changing the threat landscape, challenging organisations to rethink risk, resilience and defence as attacks become faster, more adaptive and increasingly autonomous.

At , Alex Zoldova from Microsoft explored how attackers are already operationalising AI at scale and shared six board-ready actions organisations can implement within the next 90 days:

• Establish full visibility of AI usage across the organisation
• Provide employees secure AI alternatives, so unmanaged usage declines
• Apply Zero Trust to AI agents, same as we're doing for our identities inside the organisations
• Prioritise a phishing triage agent as the first AI use case
• Quantify risk financially, in terms the board understands
• Automate compliance
