Global public EV charging infrastructure is approaching a major milestone.

New data suggests the number of publicly accessible EV chargers worldwide is set to surpass 9 million installations in 2026. The growth reflects sustained investment across markets, with China, Europe and North America all accelerating deployment at pace.

Several forces are driving this expansion. Government incentives continue to support rollout, private investment in charging networks is increasing, and rising EV adoption is creating stronger commercial cases for new sites. The result is a global network that is becoming denser, faster, and more widely distributed.

As installation numbers climb, focus is shifting toward the quality of the charging experience. Reliability, uptime, smart energy management and seamless payment are becoming as important as location and speed. Building chargers is one thing. Ensuring they work consistently for millions of drivers is another.

The shift is clear. The global charging network is no longer catching up with EV adoption. It is scaling to meet it.

Energy infrastructure is becoming central to the net zero transition, and ownership of distribution networks matters more than ever.

ENGIE has announced the acquisition of UK Power Networks, the electricity distribution network operator serving London, the South East and the East of England. The network delivers power to more than eight million homes and businesses across these regions.

This is a significant move. Distribution networks sit at the heart of electrification, connecting renewables, EV charging, heat pumps and battery storage to the grid. As demand rises and flexibility becomes more valuable, control and coordination at this level becomes increasingly strategic.

For ENGIE, the acquisition strengthens its position across generation, supply and infrastructure. For the UK energy system, it signals continued investment into modernising and digitising the networks that will carry a growing share of transport and heating demand.

The shift is clear. The energy transition is not only about building new generation. It is about owning and upgrading the networks that make electrification possible.

EV charging is becoming a normal part of everyday life, but upfront costs have remained a barrier for many households and small businesses.

The UK Government has extended, increased, and simplified the existing EV charger grant scheme, now available until March 2027. Eligible applicants can claim up to £500 per chargepoint, covering almost half the installation cost, with broader access for renters, flat owners, landlords, businesses, and schools.

This isn’t just about more chargers. It’s about making everyday EV charging accessible and convenient, whether at home, in workplaces, or at community sites. Simplifying and increasing the grant means more people can plug in confidently, supporting the transition to electric transport.

The shift is clear. Scaling EV adoption depends on affordable, easy-to-install charging infrastructure, and this scheme makes that possible for more households and organisations than ever before.

Ultra-rapid EV charging is evolving, and reliability is now just as important as speed.

have added on-site battery storage to their ultra-rapid charging hub on the M6, helping chargers operate independently from grid constraints and reducing pressure on local networks.

By storing energy on site, chargers can deliver consistent high power even during peak demand. It also allows energy to be drawn from the grid more intelligently, smoothing spikes and improving overall efficiency.

This is a clear signal of where EV infrastructure is heading. Charging sites are no longer just endpoints. They are becoming energy assets in their own right, combining charging, storage, and smart control.

As ultra-rapid charging scales across the UK, grid capacity alone will not be enough. Storage will play a growing role in keeping chargers online, queues short, and journeys predictable.

The shift is clear. The future of EV charging is not just faster chargers. It is smarter energy behind them.

Electric vehicles are doing more than changing how we drive. They are starting to reshape how we store and manage energy.

A UK startup has unveiled industrial battery systems built from repurposed EV battery packs, extending their useful life beyond the vehicle and into grid-scale and commercial energy storage.

Even after an EV battery is no longer optimal for driving, it still holds significant capacity. Reusing those batteries for storage turns a potential waste problem into a long-term energy asset.

This is where the energy ecosystem starts to connect. EVs, solar, and storage are no longer separate conversations. They are parts of the same system, feeding flexibility back into the grid and helping businesses smooth peaks, cut costs, and increase resilience.

As more EVs hit the road, the volume of second-life batteries will grow. That creates an opportunity, not just for sustainability, but for smarter energy infrastructure built around reuse and efficiency.

The shift is clear. Energy storage is not just about new batteries. It is about using what we already have, better.

The UK solar market is accelerating, and it sends a clear signal about where the energy system is heading: scale, speed, and long-term confidence.

New forecasts suggest UK solar capacity could grow by another 50% in 2026, adding over 5 GW of new generation in a single year. That would make it one of the strongest growth periods the sector has ever seen.

This is solar moving beyond early adoption. Utility-scale projects, commercial rooftops, and private investment are all lining up, driven by falling costs, energy security concerns, and demand for predictable power.

As capacity grows, expectations rise. More sites, more assets, more complexity. Solar no longer stands alone. It increasingly needs to work alongside batteries, EV charging, and smarter operational tools to deliver real value over its lifetime.

When clean power becomes abundant, the focus shifts. From whether solar is viable, to how well it is managed, maintained, and integrated into wider energy systems.

The UK solar market is not slowing down. It is scaling up.

BYD is bringing the future of EV charging to the UK, and it makes a clear statement on one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: charging speed.

With its new 1,000 kW “Flash” ultra‑rapid chargers, BYD can deliver around 250 miles of range in just five minutes. Charging starts to feel less like a wait and more like a quick pause, removing one of the biggest hurdles to long-distance EV travel.

This is the direction the market is moving in. Ultra-fast charging, high-voltage technology, and EVs that fit seamlessly into everyday life without constant planning around plugs and power.

When charging stops being the worry, the conversation shifts. From whether an EV can work for your journey, to how quickly it can get you back on the road.

With rollout plans for 300 chargers nationwide this year, that future is arriving sooner than many expect.

Volvo has unveiled the all-electric EX60, and it makes a clear statement on one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: range anxiety.

With up to 503 miles on a single charge, the EX60 pushes well beyond the point where daily driving needs even come into question. Add its 800-volt architecture, delivering up to 211 miles of range in around 10 minutes, and charging starts to feel more like a coffee stop than a compromise.

This is the direction the market is moving in. Longer range, faster charging, and EVs that fit seamlessly into everyday life without constant planning around plugs and power.

When range stops being the worry, the conversation shifts. From whether an EV works, to which one works best.

And with production starting this spring and deliveries landing this summer, that future feels very close.

The government has unveiled the biggest home upgrade programme in British history.

The £15bn Warm Homes Plan aims to upgrade up to 5 million homes with insulation, solar, batteries and heat pumps, cutting bills for good and lifting up to 1 million families out of fuel poverty by 2030.

With grants for low-income households, new protections for renters, and low or zero interest loans to unlock a nationwide rooftop revolution, this marks a clear shift from short-term bill support to long-term affordability.

Demand for clean energy tech is already at record levels. This plan backs that momentum with funding, standards and delivery at scale.

The key question now is ex*****on. Turning policy into real installs, simple customer journeys, and joined-up delivery across local authorities, landlords and installers will be what determines success.

But the signal is clear. Warm, efficient homes are moving from nice to have to national infrastructure.
