Lenovo Laptop — Deep Clean, Repair & Thermal Service

Thermal paste has a shelf life. ⏳

It's the grey stuff between your processor and its cooler, and its whole job is to fill the microscopic gaps between the two so heat can cross. When it's fresh it works beautifully. After three or four years of heat cycles it dries out, cracks, and turns into an insulator instead of a conductor.

That's what you're looking at in the first photo — the crusty grey residue on this Lenovo's processor. The laptop wasn't faulty. It was just being strangled by a five-pound consumable that had reached the end of its life.

Cleaned off, fresh paste applied, temperatures back where they should be.

MacBook Air — Liquid Damage Recovery

Spilled something on your MacBook? Do NOT plug it in to 'see if it still works'. ☕🚫

That's the single most expensive mistake people make. Liquid on a powered board causes corrosion, and corrosion plus voltage causes shorts. A machine that could have been saved on Monday can be beyond saving by Wednesday.

This MacBook Air came in after a spill. The second photo shows the tell-tale residue tidemark, and the third is a close look at the power circuitry where the liquid tracked across.

The right process is board-level: get it open, get it clean, get it dry, inspect every component under magnification, and repair what the corrosion has eaten. Not 'leave it in rice' — that does nothing except waste the days that actually matter.

Mini PCs are brilliant. They're also the easiest machines in the world to forget about. 🖥️

This little GEEKOM has a Ryzen 9 in it — a genuinely powerful processor — squeezed into a box the size of a paperback. There's very little room for cooling, which means when the cooling clogs up, it clogs up fast.

Photo two shows what we found: the heatsink fins packed solid with compacted dust. Nothing was getting through.

The strip-down: cooler off, fins cleared, fan cleaned, old dried paste removed from the processor (photo three, cleaned back to bare silicon), fresh paste and fresh thermal putty applied (photo four — the pink stuff transfers heat from the memory and power components).

Photo five is the same machine reassembled and clean.

Because these sit tucked behind a monitor or under a desk, people genuinely don't notice them struggling until they start crashing. If you've got one running 24/7, it's worth a look.

ASUS Laptop — Repaste and RAM Upgrade

Before you replace a slow laptop, try this. 💡

This ASUS came in as 'too slow to use'. It didn't need replacing — it needed two things:

1️⃣ A thermal service. The processor's original paste had dried out (photo two shows it cleaned back to bare silicon, photo three shows fresh paste going on). A hot processor deliberately slows itself down.

2️⃣ More memory. It shipped with the bare minimum, and modern browsers and Office will eat that for breakfast. There was an empty slot sitting right there.

Two jobs, a couple of hours, a fraction of the price of a new machine — and the customer's got a laptop that feels new again.

Not every slow laptop is worth upgrading, and we'll always tell you straight if yours isn't. But a lot of them are.

HP Laptop — Hinge Damage and Corrosion

Does your laptop lid feel stiff, or make a cracking noise when you open it? Stop and get it looked at. ⚠️

Here's why. This HP came in with corrosion around both hinge mountings — you can see the rust staining around the screw posts in the first photo.

Laptop hinges are anchored into the plastic casing. Once a hinge starts binding, every single time you open the lid you're levering against those anchor points. First the plastic cracks. Then the mounting posts tear out. Then the hinge starts pulling the screen bezel apart, and what would have been a small job becomes a new lid assembly and sometimes a new screen.

Caught early, it's straightforward. Caught late, it's expensive.

Look at the first photo. That yellow-blonde fluff hanging out of the vents? That's the machine trying to tell you something. 👀

This is a Dell Precision — a serious workstation with two fans and a twin-heatpipe cooling system, the sort of laptop people run CAD and video editing on all day. All that cooling capacity counts for nothing when both exhausts are blocked solid.

Machines like this pull hard and get worked hard, which means they collect dust faster than an average laptop, not slower. If you run a workstation for a living, a clean every 12–18 months is genuinely one of the best-value things you can do for it.

Dell Laptop — Dust Clean, Repair and Repaste

Nine times out of ten this isn't a software problem and it isn't age. It's this.

Photo one is the cooling fan on a Dell that came in this week — the blades furred over with dust. Photo two is what we found underneath when we lifted it off: the exhaust completely blocked. Air physically could not get through.

When a laptop can't cool itself it protects itself by slowing right down. That's the sluggishness people put up with for months before they give up and buy a new machine.

Photo three is the processor with its original thermal paste, dried out and cracked. Photo four is after cleaning and repasting.

The whole job takes an hour or two and the difference is night and day. Considerably cheaper than a new laptop, too.

Behind the glass. 📱

Most people never see the inside of their phone — so here's a look. This is an iPhone 13 opened up for a screen replacement: battery on the left, logic board tucked down the side, the whole thing packed in tighter than you'd believe.

There's no room for guesswork at this size. Screws that look identical are different lengths, and putting the wrong one back in the wrong hole can go straight through the board. It's slow, careful work — which is exactly why it's worth having someone do it who does it every day.

One drop. That's all it takes. 📱💥

This iPad landed on its corner — you can see exactly where it hit in the second photo, with the cracks fanning out from the impact point around the home button.

The good news for whoever owns this one: a cracked screen almost never means a dead tablet. The display underneath and everything inside is usually completely fine. It's a screen job, not a new-iPad job.

The bad news, if you leave it: those cracks let dust and moisture in, and the sharp edges will eventually catch a finger. It's worth getting sorted sooner rather than later.

Full Restoration and Repaste
A proper bit of nostalgia came through the door this week. 🖤

An original 'fat' PS3 — the big glossy one. These are getting on for twenty years old now, and the ones still alive are the ones that get looked after.

This one was struggling. Take a look at photo two: that's not shadow, that's years of dust felted into every vent and around every cable. Photo three is the fan and heatsink — you can see the original thermal paste has gone completely hard and cracked, which means the Cell processor and the graphics chip have been cooking themselves for a long while.

The job: complete strip-down, every surface cleaned, all the old dried paste removed from both chips, fresh high-quality paste applied, fan and vents cleared, and back together.

Photo four is the fresh paste going on. Photo five is what the inside is supposed to look like.

Running cool and quiet, and hopefully good for a few more years of Skate 3.
