Join this weekly masterclass with renowned improviser, voice actor and coach Alan Marriott and video game performance director Mark Estdale for an in depth journey building stronger and clearer characters for games and improv.
The 5 weekly classes will be at OMUK, Tuesday evenings, 7pm to 9pm starting 12 November with the last session on the 10th December.
In improv, the stage is the performer’s safe and courageous place where support, listening, being present, connection, flow and clear choices are what makes the magic work. The nuance of the character work is the icing on the cake. This series of workshops are laser focused on the craft of deepening character precision and confidence. For games, it’s the same. Living connected nuanced character performances, sadly lacking in so many games, elevate everything. These sessions come from a passionate dedication to eliminating the cliches and stereotypes that weaken audience connection and enjoyment.
Each week will focus on one element of character performance work.
WEEK 1 - SPEED / PACE
- The 1 - 10 ‘speedometer’
- Finding character pace through the text
- Lifting, spreading, and thrilling individual words and phrases
- Beats and pauses
WEEK 2 - PITCH
- The five pitch ranges
- Mirroring scenes - Head and Chest voice (in pairs)
- ‘Landing points’ and inflection
- The pitch range for a character
WEEK 3 - TONAL PLACEMENT / RESONANCE
- Using character description and design to define placement and resonance
- Using nasal and non-nasal resonance
- Finding the ‘Ah’ (the character’s tone centre)
- jaw , eyes, ears, throat
- Using accent, and impressions as placement starting points
WEEK 4 - GESTURE
- Gesture - How a character reacts to the world
- Pre- life and vowels
- The character’s laugh
- Character habits, temperament, and Laban efforts
- Mantras and trigger phrases
WEEK 5 - MUSICALITY AND PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
- Melody and rhythmic patterns in characters
- Animal inspirations
- Description, design, text, and character choices
- Taking direction
This is a no holds barred performer's work out. Hear-see-do with an emphasis on the doing.
Alan and Mark will embed the the joy of playing characters with confidence and precision. This is all about being able to find the exhilaration of hitting the performance flow that thrills performer and audience alike.
