Is your school’s cyber security ready for the new academic year? 🔐

With schools holding more sensitive data than ever, having the right cyber security measures in place is essential.

But where do you start?

Our Cyber Security Checklist for Schools covers the key areas schools should be considering, including:

✅ Network security
✅ Passwords & MFA
✅ Backup & recovery
✅ Device security
✅ Staff awareness & training
✅ Phishing protection
✅ Policies & procedures

Whether you’re reviewing your current setup or looking to strengthen your school’s defences, this checklist is a great place to start.

🔐 One password isn’t enough anymore.

Schools hold a huge amount of valuable and sensitive information, making them an increasingly attractive target for cyber criminals.

That’s where Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) comes in.

MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring users to verify their identity in more than one way. So, even if a password is compromised, there’s another barrier standing between attackers and your school’s systems.

For schools, MFA can help protect:
💻 Staff and student accounts
📚 School data and systems
📧 Email accounts
☁️ Cloud services
🔒 Sensitive information

It’s one of the simplest steps a school can take to strengthen its cyber security.

👉 Could your school be doing more to protect its accounts?

🚨 Could your school recover from a ransomware attack?

Ransomware is one of the biggest cyber threats facing schools today. A single attack can lock staff out of vital systems, disrupt learning, and put sensitive pupil data at risk.

The good news? Simple measures like regular backups, multi-factor authentication (MFA), staff awareness training, and keeping systems up to date can dramatically reduce your risk.

Don't wait until it's too late, make sure your school has a ransomware prevention and recovery plan in place.

📧 Could your school spot a phishing email before it's too late?

Phishing remains one of the biggest cyber security threats facing schools. It only takes one click on a convincing email to put sensitive pupil data, staff accounts and your network at risk.

The good news? Most phishing attacks can be prevented through staff awareness, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), robust email security and regular phishing simulations.

We've put together a practical guide covering:
🔹 Why schools are targeted
🔹 How to recognise phishing emails
🔹 What to do if someone clicks a malicious link
🔹 The best ways to protect your school

🔒 Cyber security isn't just an IT issue - it's a safeguarding priority.

Schools are increasingly targeted by phishing attacks, ransomware and data breaches, making it more important than ever to ensure your staff, students and systems are protected.

The Department for Education also expects schools to work towards meeting its core cyber security standards.

At Classroom365, we help schools and Multi-Academy Trusts strengthen their cyber resilience with security audits, staff awareness training, secure Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace environments, next-generation firewalls, endpoint protection, backup solutions and Cyber Essentials guidance.

Don't wait until an incident happens, take a proactive approach to protecting your school.

📢 It’s 2026… but KCSIE 2025 still applies

From 1 September 2025, the updated Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2025 guidance is in force. While much of the framework remains the same, there are important clarifications and added expectations that schools must act on now.

Key updates include:
• Recognition of misinformation, disinformation and conspiracy theories as safeguarding harms that can affect pupils’ welfare.
• Online safety revisions with links to generative AI safety expectations and filtering & monitoring self-assessment tools.
• More explicit cyber security expectations to improve school resilience (backups, MFA, Wi-Fi security, patching).
• Attendance guidance (“Working together to improve school attendance”) is now statutory.
• Updated references for RSHE and forthcoming guidance on gender-questioning children.
• SEND language aligned with current practice by removing terms like “spectrum” and “disorder.”
• Clarified roles for Virtual School Heads and added links for support services like Shore Space for child-on-child concerns.

What this means for schools:
✔️ Review and update online safety policies to reflect new harms and AI risks.
✔️ Complete filtering & monitoring self-assessments and evidence your annual review.
✔️ Ensure cyber security measures (backups, MFA, patching) are in place and documented.
✔️ Update safer recruitment links and SEND terminology in policy documents.
✔️ Brief staff on changes and retain Part 1 read acknowledgements for compliance.

🎙️ We’ve also covered the key KCSIE 2025 changes on our podcast, available on our website, where we break down what’s changed and what it means in practice for schools and trusts.

At Classroom365, we support schools and trusts with practical compliance guidance, cyber security alignment and robust online safety systems that meet the latest statutory expectations.

🔐 Cyber security for schools: planning ahead for the New Year

🎄As many schools pause for the Christmas holidays, it’s a great time to reflect on the evolving cyber security challenges facing education.

The education sector continues to be a common target for cyber threats such as phishing, ransomware and data breaches. These incidents can disrupt teaching, compromise sensitive information and place significant strain on already stretched resources.

At Classroom365, we specialise in cyber security for schools and multi-academy trusts, and we’re Cyber Essentials Plus certified, the UK Government-backed standard for defending against common cyber threats.

Our tailored approach starts with a cyber security audit and health check, followed by a clear, affordable roadmap aligned to your school’s size, existing IT setup and budget.
We support schools with:
• Next-generation network and firewall security
• Secure Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace environments
• Email security and anti-phishing protection
• Endpoint protection and device management
• Staff cyber awareness training
• Policy, documentation and compliance support aligned with DfE and NCSC guidance

Strong cyber security underpins safeguarding and data protection — helping to keep pupils, staff and sensitive data secure.

📅 If strengthening your school’s cyber resilience is on your New Year agenda, we’d be happy to continue the conversation when term resumes.
