Without effective cargo risk management, multinational companies risk losing $$$K with each shipment in Africa.

In just under 3 years, Africa has witnessed 8 forceful change of political power. These and other types of risks make Africa a unique business terrain for
multinational
companies.

One of the most critical aspects of doing business on the continent is the shipment of goods to and from its numerous ports or crossing several borders. While
cargo risk management in Africa
is fraught with complexities,
those who master it not
only safeguard their
operations but also
carve out a significant
competitive advantage.

The ability to collect and visually assess risks in real time across different countries is a super power that is also recognised by carriers like Maersk.

In its The Future is Now: Digitalisation of African Supply Chain Management Systems, Maersk concedes that
Cloud computing enables real-
time data collection, collation,
and analysis, which assists
businesses in making
better decisions.

For multinational companies, this digital approach translates to streamlined operations, reduced costs, and a competitive edge.

For cargo underwriters seeking to provide an Africa-wide all-risk marine cover, technology offers more accurate
risk assessment, quicker claim
processing, and ultimately,
more competitive
premium
pricing.

P.S. If you are a supply chain / risk manager or a cargo insurer looking to mitigate risks for multinational companies in Africa, let us help.

Leaving No One Behind: Financial Inclusion Through Innovation

The 45th OESAI Conference, which also marked the organization's 50th anniversary, recently concluded
in the picturesque island nation
of Mauritius. The conference’s
theme resonated across various discussions, including those
focused on risk management
in the cargo insurance
sector.

For years, the cargo insurance industry in many African countries has faced challenges related to capital access
and market pe*******on. These
issues have often resulted in a
lack of comprehensive risk
management strategies,
leaving many stakeholders
in the industry
vulnerable.

Traditionally, risk management in cargo insurance has been a domain dominated by a few large players, often sidelining smaller businesses and individual stakeholders. The industry is at
a point where the older generation
of risk managers is retiring, and
there's a noticeable lack of
interest among younger
professionals who
perceive the sector
as less than glamorous.

This is where technology can play a transformative role. By leveraging advanced tech solutions, we can democratize risk management
expertise across the
continent.

Technology can capture and disseminate the accumulated wisdom of seasoned professionals, making it accessible
to newcomers and smaller players
in the industry. This not only fills
the talent and knowledge gap
but also makes the sector
more inclusive and
appealing.

I believe there is a strong relation between risk management and a company’s
ability to turn a profit.

Let us leverage technology to increase cargo insurance pe*******on so that
no one is left behind.

Did you know that carriers often employ various legal defences to avoid or limit their liability in cargo claims?

Understanding and countering these defences can be challenging for cargo owners and shippers, particularly when dealing with complex legal concepts and international conventions.

To navigate legal defences effectively, it's essential to have a solid understanding of the applicable laws and conventions.

Consult with legal experts to ensure you're well informed about the relevant legal framework and prepared to counter any defences presented by carriers.

How do you tackle legal defences presented by your carrier? Let us know in the comments!

The advent of Covid 19 changed or alter the way business was done in the food industry. This has led to a shift towards digital methods instead of traditional methods like word of mouth or physical conferences in the food industry today. This has impacted the way food traders promote and sell their products and there's been a massive impact on digital transformation in agriculture.

One of the most fascinating things in agriculture is forced adaptation. There's a solid traditional mindset in agriculture, and it cuts across all the departments in agriculture where everyone is comfortable with what works or the status quo and is adamant to change, but Covid 19 brought people into having to look at how to change their businesses with digitalization. It made exporters start looking at how they can leverage both traditional and digitalisation in their way of working.

Now that Covid 19 has subsided, some exporters are trying to go back to the old way of doing business which is the traditional nature of agriculture but they are seeing the potential in digital marketing and are willing to explore them.

70% of B2B decision makers are now preferring their buying to happen virtually, meaning either through a platform, a self-service platform or in a remote setting via digital meetings.

This indicates that even past Covid 19, digital marketing and digital sales will remain. Digitalization is here to stay and all the players in the food industry should be looking into ways they can implement technology in order to minimize time, save costs, and improve trust and transparency.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below on how Covid 19 has impacted the fruit industry today.

Whether exporting litchis or lemons from South Africa or Chile, delay in transit has become a regular point of discussion for fruit traders.

Carriers are quick to point to the bill of lading clause which states that ETAs are no guarantee for when the vessel will arrive.

Carriers often always point to inclement weather as a reason for the delay.

Unfortunately for fruit traders, cargo insurers are not too keen to cover such risks.

So they are often left to fend for themselves.

Follow this thought pattern when dealing with a delay claim to increase your chances of success:

- Who are the stakeholders and what are their legal responsibilities?

- Understand the sale term of the consignment in question.

- Consider the cause of the cause of the delay and its legal consequence. Was it an Act of God? Did the carrier adequately exercise its duty to take care of the cargo?

- Documenting every step will help shorten the claim’s live cycle.

Unfortunately, these claims are often brought many months after the event. By such times, information like weather condition is hard to come by.

If you want to know how to use our application to win more of your cargo claims, let’s have a chat!

The loading of a vehicle is a crucial process that needs expert handling and care.

In Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipping, a Grimaldi representative drives the
Tiguan from the secure lot onto the ship. Here, it's parked and secured to
the deck to prevent movement during the voyage.

If we were using container shipping, the Tiguan would be placed inside a steel container, in which a crane is loaded onto the ship.

In both scenarios, visual evidence of the loading process is essential. Photos
of the car as it's driven onto the RoRo ship, or as it's secured within the
container, provide documented proof of the vehicle's condition and proper
loading.

Condition survey reports typically contain similar types of information. This was noticed when we conducted a study of over 800 condition surveys. They include;

- The parties involved
- Port of loading and port of discharge
- Shipment and delivery dates
- Type of cargo shipped
- Confirmation of harvest dates of the fruits
- Confirmation of the stuffing pattern within the re**er container
- The confirmation of the booking instructions as found on the booking note or the survey report
- Visual verification of the condition of the fruits (photo of firmness, softness, penetrometer, color, flesh, mold, etc)
- Cause of loss or damage (delay, temperature, contamination, pre-shipment defects, etc)
- Storage temperature
- Container setting and condition
- Container sealing and exchange, etc...

From the above list, most of the information is publicly available if you know where to look. For those relating to the condition of the fruits, mobile phones are good enough these days to clearly confirm this.

Especially when they are conducted with a trusted and secured digital tool.

Do you face challenges while conducting your condition survey? Let us know in the comments below. We can help!

In today's globalized economy, the international fruit industry plays a crucial role in supplying a diverse range of fresh produce to consumers around the world. As the demand for fruit continues to grow, so too does the need for efficient and effective methods of transporting and inspecting these goods. One solution that has gained traction in recent years is the use of remote containerized cargo inspections.

One of the key benefits of remote containerized cargo inspections is their ability to save time and resources. Traditional inspection methods often require a team of experts to physically travel to the location of the cargo, a process that can be time-consuming and costly.

Another advantage of remote containerized cargo inspections is their ability to ensure the safety and quality of the fruit. Traditional inspection methods may not always be able to provide the level of detail and accuracy needed to identify potential issues with the cargo.

By enabling experts to conduct inspections from a remote location, the process of transporting and inspecting fruit can be streamlined, reducing the time and resources required to move the goods from one location to another. This can help to reduce costs and improve the overall efficiency of the supply chain, ultimately benefiting both producers and consumers alike.

In conclusion, the use of remote containerized cargo inspections offers a range of benefits to the international fruit industry. By enabling efficient and accurate inspections, these methods can help to ensure the safety and quality of the fruit, while also improving the overall efficiency of the supply chain. As the demand for fresh produce continues to grow, the use of remote containerized cargo inspections is likely to become even more important in the coming years.
