We are pleased to announce our change of company name from 'Holistic City' to 'CityCAD Technologies'

Since we launched back in 2005, the company has evolved in many ways but the aim has always been the same - to create technology that supports the development of sustainable and liveable cities.

Our main product, CityCAD, has been at the core of most of our projects and we wanted our company name to reflect this.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all current and past clients for your support and wish you all the best with your projects. We will continue to develop CityCAD as a tool for creating masterplans quickly and easily, and look forward to working with you in the future.

From an administrative point of view, please be assured that this is just a change of name and office address. The company is still the same legal entity based in the UK and there has been no change of ownership. All subscriptions and other services will not be affected.

The latest version of CityCAD (v 3.1.4) - is now available. If you have a CityCAD licence, please download and install this version from https://www.holisticcity.co.uk/downloads

This is a minor upgrade, and includes a mix of new features and bug fixes for issues reported by users.

Looking ahead, we are interested in developing the analysis capabilities of CityCAD. Our development programme is guided by you and so please let us know if there are any features which would add value to your work.

We're pleased to announce the release of CityCAD 3.1 at a special new price of only £15/month + VAT for single user licences.

This new version includes a beta feature where you can search for a real-world location on a map and CityCAD will automatically place a base map image on the ground. You can then draw streets and blocks on top and easily add features such as houses, schools, sports facilities and vehicles from our online urban design library.

We've also made it easier to edit CityCAD blocks. You can now apply pre-set block settings from within the properties panel, and you can also now convert (or 'explode') block perimeter objects into individual city items. This gives more control over the detailed layout of a block once the concept has been decided.

The UK government is currently proposing a complete overhaul of the planning system, switching from an application-based to a zoning-based system.

But underneath these big headline changes, there are also important proposals for reforming data. They propose that "local plans are built on standardised, digitally consumable rules and data, enabling accessible interactive maps that show what can be built where. The data will be accessed by software used across the public sector and also by external PropTech entrepreneurs to improve transparency, decision-making and productivity in the sector."

The Urban Design Group is running a series of events on the new planning proposals, and we are looking forward to participating in episode 2 (Digital Futures) tomorrow at 12.30 BST.

Have you tried the new cycle-friendly junctions in CityCAD?

These are normal junctions (with the kerb radius set to zero on all corners), but the detail is provided by a city item that fits in the middle of the junction.

To place one, go to the City Design Assistant panel on the left and select Library > Movement Infrastructure > Residential street junction.

Getting street design right continues to be one of the biggest challenges in new urban developments. We focus on buildings, but pay too little attention to the spaces between buildings.

We have just released Streetscape 2.0 - a new version of a quick and simple street design tool we first made back in 2005. The basic idea is unchanged - create a list of elements such as pavements and cycle lanes, and a cross section and plan diagram are created automatically.

In this version we have refreshed the user interface and improved the graphics for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

We have also integrated it with our urban design database, so that if you are working on a street which is for example 25m wide, you can press a button and see a list of real-world streets of about the same width. Click on the list to see more details and a view of the street.

Streetscape is free of charge (for commercial use too). We are always interested to hear about how our software is being used so please get in touch with any feedback or suggestions.
