*Important Update from the ICO*

A new UK data law kicks in tomorrow (19th June), and most small businesses haven't heard about it.

From that date, every business, including sole traders needs a clear process for handling data protection complaints, separate from general customer complaints. You'll need to acknowledge a complaint within 30 days, investigate it, and tell the person the outcome.

The fix is small: add a line to your privacy policy, decide who owns it, write a short process, and keep a basic log.

Most businesses will never need it. Having one in place still matters, and it tells customers you take their data seriously.

Someone opens ChatGPT and types: “Can you recommend an anxiety counsellor in Ealing?”

What decides whether your name comes up?

Not ads, and not how pretty your site looks. AI tools pull from pages that are clear, specific, and easy to understand.

Three things that help:
- Name the problems you help with, not just your method
- Add an FAQ that answers the questions clients actually ask
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete and accurate

I wrote a full guide on getting your site into AI search results. It is free to read.

Jane Travis and I ran our free workshop for therapists and counsellors last Thursday, on getting found online without losing your voice. Here are the three points that landed hardest.

One: your website is read in about 12 seconds. Most of that time goes on deciding whether you feel like the right person, not reading your qualifications.

Two: Google and AI search now reward plain, specific writing. The pages that show up answer real questions in real language.

Three: small wording changes usually beat a full redesign. You rarely need a new website. You need the one you have to work harder.

If you missed it, the free audit I mentioned on the day is still open. I will tell you honestly what your site does well and what to fix first.

What a brilliant business expo hosted by the Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce on Friday.

It was one of the best local expos I've been to, bringing over 125 businesses under one roof at ARC Uxbridge and creating a genuine space for networking, collaboration, and discovering local opportunities. After working in events I know just how much work goes into pulling an event like this together, so congratulations to everyone involved!

It was also lovely to see Tejas Kotecha Jo Fillmore-Boonstra Inderpall Kaur B. Minal Patel and quite a few other familiar faces. I'm very tempted to book a stand myself next year and hope even more west London businesses attend!

Check whether your website pages actually link to each other.

Most small business websites are built page by page and never properly connected. Google struggles to understand what matters most on your site when everything sits in isolation.

Quick wins to sort this week:
- Every service page should link to your contact page
- Every blog post should link to at least one relevant service page
- Your homepage should link clearly to your main services

Go to your three most-visited pages and add one internal link to each. Small change, genuine SEO impact.

The free online workshop I’m hosting with Jane Travis for therapists and counsellors is happening TOMORROW

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/make-your-private-practice-website-stand-out-online-tickets-1989648433023

If you’ve been wondering why some therapy websites seem to appear everywhere on Google while others struggle to get seen, this session will help make sense of it.

We’ll be talking about how AI and modern search are changing the way potential clients find therapists online and what you can do to make your website more visible, more useful, and more aligned with the people you want to work with.

Jane will be sharing practical advice on how to write website copy that sounds genuine, human, and reflective of your approach.

I’ll be covering what Google is looking for now, how search behaviour is changing, and the simple things therapists can do to improve their online presence without getting overwhelmed by the technical side.

No jargon, no hype, just practical guidance for therapists who want their website to work better for their practice.

If you write a blog post, you already have the raw material for four or five social media posts.

A 600-word article on anxiety and therapy could become:
- A short LinkedIn tip using one key point
- A question for Instagram asking followers to share their experience
- A short video walking through the main ideas
- An email newsletter section for your subscribers

Most small business owners write content once and then forget about it. Repurposing means your best ideas keep working for you.

Start with your three most popular blog posts. What could you pull from each one?

If you need help building a content plan that fits around your schedule, I can help with that too.

I’ve just launched a new free tool for small businesses to understand how Google may be evaluating their website trust and authority:
https://theoruby.com/eeat-tool-for-small-businesses/

It’s designed to give you a quick “Google-style” trust score based on the E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust) and highlight areas you could strengthen.

It’s currently in beta, so all results should be treated as a rough guide rather than a definitive audit. And as always, any changes you make should be shaped by your clients, your goals, and what actually makes sense for your business - not just the score.

If you’re a small business owner trying to show up better in search, this is a simple place to start.

Six months ago you probably had plans for your website in 2026. How many of them actually happened?

That is not a criticism. Running a practice or a business means other things always come first. But if your website has been sitting unchanged since January, it is worth a quick look now.

Three things to check this week:
- Log into Google Search Console and look at your top pages. Have impressions and clicks grown?
- Submit your contact form and confirm the message lands in your inbox
- Read your homepage as if you are a potential client seeing it for the first time

If something does not feel right, it probably needs attention before summer.

I offer a free, no-obligation website and SEO audit. I will tell you honestly what is working and what to prioritise.
