We have today quit Twittter. Concern about the new leader’s dictatorial edicts was bad enough but to read that so far 60% of the remaining employees are in favour of reinstating Donald Trump’s account, that same lying, odious, seditious, dangerous being, who abuses free speech, was too much to swallow. This is not an organisation that we wish to be associated with.

Is your IT supporting your workers – your Partners, your fee-earners, your support staff?
Last month we discussed supporting you workers in a flexible office. This month, let’s turn our attention to your IT systems.

Is your IT supporting your workers – your Partners, your fee-earners, your support staff?

Ask yourself “Did IT enable our practitioners and support staff to work from home during the Covid-19 pandemic?”. Or did it put even more pressure on both your infrastructure and your staff? Is it fit for purpose now and into the future?

In the legal sector – particularly in the small-medium sized firms – there hasn’t previously been the drive to invest and modernise IT.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been, in some firms, the catalyst for the reality of home working. In other firms it’s been the Achilles heel.

-How much simpler and more productive – and therefore cost-efficient – it is for firms with case and practice management systems?
-How much easier it is to work with customised workflows?
-How much less disruptive is it when integrations and online systems enable workers to access what they need remotely.

In all cases, firms need to deliver efficient, consistent and secure network access for all employees, regardless of whether they are working from home or in the office. *Gartner calls it the “Everywhere Enterprise”.

Hybrid working? Remote working? Hybrid workplace?

There’s a growing amount of discussion around “Hybrid working”, “Remote Working” and “Hybrid Workplace” at the moment.

What does it mean, what actually is a hybrid workplace?

In a nutshell, it’s the provision of flexible shared working/meeting space alongside provision of digital support to home offices – for a flexible workforce. When your workers need to, they work in the office – perhaps as a team or with clients for a project or meeting.
But when they don’t need to, they work from a supported home office.

Is your existing remote working strategy fit for a hybrid workforce?

In other words, for both when in the office and when working from a home office? Certainly it isn’t if you consider giving them a laptop and a mobile phone is a remote working strategy.

Perhaps it would be better if one of your firm’s goals was to achieve the “highest levels of productivity and engagement”, rather than “the highest levels of staff in the office between 9am and 5pm”.

Lawyers and law firms. A service or a hybrid workplace?
Did the first national lockdown on 23rd March 2020 prove to be the tipping point in the way legal services are delivered and consumed?

Lawyers and the wider legal professional adapted extremely well to the challenge, they had to. The provision of professional legal services was in huge demand as government, businesses, individuals and society in general grappled with the legal ramifications of the seismic change in our “ordinary” way of life.

Lawyers found new and efficient ways to communicate with clients, colleagues, partners and other professionals. Video conferencing from home offices, remote hearings, mediation via Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Cisco Webex, VPN connection to the main office.

Legal professionals became more proficient at working from remote locations. IT infrastructure provided “safe bubbles” for lawyers and professional support teams to work in different ways and clients embraced these changes.

Many law firms continued to provide first class services to their clients throughout the pandemic supported by innovative use of technology and remote working, notwithstanding reduction in staff levels, meetings and travel times.

So where do we go from here?
After staff, the biggest fixed overhead for many firms is the cost of the building or lease.

Could a hybrid workplace – which provides a flexible workspace and digital support to home offices – be the answer?

Teams can work together in the same space and at the same time, when they need to or when they meet clients or attend hearings. When they don’t need to, they can work from their digital home office.

When you’re considering your workplace and workforce strategy, take a look at New Wave Workspace, the platform that enables the Hybrid Workplace | Digital Office. https://www.legalworkflow.com/download/legal-workflow-hybrid-workplace-brochure

Last year at this time, we took a look at what the experts had to say about 2020. However, 2020 has been such a difficult year for everyone, many of those predictions have gone out the window. What we have seen though is that whereas a lot of firms have struggled with the restrictions placed upon them during the Covid-19 pandemic, others have continued to go from strength to strength. Here we consider what some have been doing that makes the difference between surviving and thriving... Read more:

Law firms must ensure compliance with Covid-19 regulations in the workplace

As we move from lockdown into regional Covid tiers in England, how is your Law Firm going to ensure compliance with Covid-19 regulations in the workplace?

Law Society Guidelines

The Law Society rules are quite clear. From social distancing in the workplace, through implementing sufficient measures to improve control of workplace risk, to meetings in tier 2 and tier 3 areas.
From a practical perspective, how will your Firm mitigate Covid-19 risk and - if called upon by the Health and Safety Executive or local authorities - demonstrate compliance?

"Failure to comply is a criminal offence, which can lead to fines or imprisonment for up to two years. This means the COVID-19 secure guidelines can be legally enforced indirectly, through improvement and prohibition notices."
