We're heading to NONOG-8 / NIX-2026! 🇳🇴

Pavel Odintsov will be speaking about FastNetMon Community Edition on September 9, right before the lunch break at 11:45 AM.

NONOG continues to be one of the key meeting points for network operators, ISPs, IXPs, content providers, and infrastructure vendors across the Nordic region. How does traffic actually reach a scrubbing centre?

A scrubbing centre can't protect traffic it never sees. Getting traffic there during an attack is the part most operators don't think about until they need it.
When a DDoS attack occurs, traffic must be redirected away from the target network and towards the scrubbing provider before any filtering can happen. Operators do this using BGP Unicast announcements to redirect affected prefixes, BGP FlowSpec rules to steer specific traffic flows, or API integrations with cloud-based scrubbing providers. The most common approach is BGP Unicast diversion, where a more specific prefix is announced toward the scrubbing centre. Due to standard BGP path selection, traffic for the affected prefix is redirected to the scrubbing centre globally.

Once traffic reaches the scrubbing infrastructure, malicious packets are filtered and legitimate traffic is returned to its destination. The scrubbing centre handles the filtering, but something still needs to decide when diversion happens, confirm the attack is over, and withdraw the announcement automatically once it ends.

Bluesky just went down for 24 hours. The culprit? A DDoS attack, and Iran-backed hackers are claiming responsibility.

Security researchers tracking the incident report that the 313 Team, a group linked to Iran, has claimed the attack. It's the second major DDoS incident to hit Bluesky in just a few months, following a similar outage in April.

The attack worked the way most large-scale DDoS attacks do: botnets and residential proxy networks flooded the platform's servers with junk traffic until legitimate requests couldn't get through. Bluesky says it has upgraded its defences and is continuing to monitor the situation.

For any organisation running public-facing infrastructure, this is a reminder of what's at stake when detection and response aren't fast enough.

"How do you test a DDoS filter with traffic that actually behaves like the real thing?"

Denys Haryachyy is back, this time on simulating volumetric DDoS at full 100GbE line rate using TRex.

The setup is one stream template reused across every attack type. A Field Engine variable rewrites the source IP per packet to fake a spoofed botnet, then each flood class just swaps the header on top of that same base, DNS, SYN, ACK, ICMP, fragment, carpet bomb.

Spoofed sources do two jobs at once. No single IP stands out to a rate limiter, and randomising across a /16 spreads the flood across every RX queue on the target instead of piling onto one core.

Carpet bombing is the odd one out, same total volume, walked across a whole prefix instead of one host, so no per-host threshold ever trips.

The global IPv4 routing table just passed 1.06 million entries. Routing mistakes are now boardroom risks.

In 2008, a single misconfigured BGP announcement took YouTube offline for two hours. More recently, routing manipulation has been used to redirect traffic and steal from users. The Uptime Institute's 2024 survey found 54% of operators said their most recent major outage cost more than $100,000, with one in five reporting costs above $1 million.

BGP was built on trust between networks. That trust has repeatedly been abused, and the cost of getting it wrong keeps climbing.

The question for network teams is no longer whether to take routing seriously. It's whether the tools they're using are fast enough and reliable enough to act on when something goes wrong.
