Are research integrity and research security really two separate problems – or two views of the same one?

They're often treated as separate aspects of research, handled by separate offices. But authors who contributed to the new Forensic Scientometrics (FoSci) Report suggest the two are interconnected.

Dr Leslie McIntosh (VP of Research Integrity & Security, Digital Science) identifies three recurring vectors:
1. deception (concealed affiliations)
2. discrediting (coordinated campaigns, including deepfakes)
3. coercion (legal intimidation and quiet pressure on researchers).

In each case, what looks like a misconduct issue on the surface often signals a security risk underneath.

Research Integrity Officers and Research Security Officers play distinct and crucial roles to maintain a solid and trustworthy research environment, but that distinction might sometimes result in silos and gaps. And these gaps between desks are exactly what's being exploited.

The tools to catch this earlier already exist – but institutions need to be organized to use them together.
